Judges comments: The Continental, situated on a 5000 square foot lot, delivers a variety of affordable apartments with a unique style and sophistication. With a shortage of energy efficient apartments at a price point working class people can afford the project offers 42 micro housing units of which 5 units are for very low income. Judges were impressed with how the landlord/property owner resolved parking. Parking takes up a tremendous amount of space. With tenants maintaining proximity to their workplace the automobile is simply eliminated. The landlord/property owner occupies a distinctly separate single-family home, referred to as “The Cube”. The Cube floats above the commercial with floor to ceiling glass walls. By utilizing every inch of the property, the core uses of the building are pushed to the neighboring property lines by opening all street frontages to natural airflow and day lighting. All around, judges felt this was a well-deserved grand winner and well-delivered addition to the stock of affordable housing options.
