Cascades Bear Island Paper Mill To Open End Of March After Conversion Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cascades an- nounced during its fourth-quarter earnings presentation on February 23 that its Bear Island containerboard con- version project is on track and the mill is expected to start up by the end of March. Originally, the facility was set to start up by the fourth quarter of 2022, but in August, Cascades reported tem- porary delays to various construction milestones and an- nounced paper production likely would be delayed to the first quarter of 2023. The company said during its presen- tation, however, that the project is set for a March startup. “The key components are all being commissioned right now, so we have a full team focused on that,” said Charles Malo, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Containerboard Packaging. “We also are working on align- ing customers and how we’re going to be able to service them. Right now, all of our team on-site is focused on start- ing up in Q1, and we’re very confident at this point that there won’t be any further delays.” Cascades announced the conversion of its Bear Island paper mill in October 2020. The facility, which is in Ash- land, Virginia, will produce lightweight, 100 percent recy- cled linerboard and medium and initially was projected to cost around $380 million. The company now reports the total cost of the project at around $515 million to $525 million, with $396 million invested in the project to date (2018-2022). The company says 100 percent of its production vol- ume is secured for this year and about 75 percent is se- cured for 2024 and 2025, and it forecasts a production of 235,000 short tons this year.

SMC Invests In BW Papersystems Machinery To Expand Capacity When SMC Packaging Group decided to purchase two G-Grafix machines from BW Papersystems, a G-Grafix flexo folder gluer and a G-Grafix rotary die-cutter, they opt- ed to include inside printing to meet the evolving goals of their clients’ marketing teams. With a fresh focus on form in addition to function, the team at SMC found themselves working more closely with clients to address their market- ing goals. “Historically our sales reps would connect with materi- als managers, buyers, purchasing agents, and now we’re broadening that scope and touching base with the mar- keting people and the owners of those businesses to try and wow them with something else that they can do,” says Kevin Ausburn, CEO of SMC Packaging Group. G-Grafix machines offer inside and outside box printing to deliver a branded product that enhances the customer experience. As packaging becomes more important as an extension of the products within, marketers are looking to take the unboxing experience to the next level. With the option to add multiple inside and outside print units, the G-Grafix line of heavy-duty corrugated converting ma- chines save time. “The margins improved, cutting down the number of passes through a machine,” added Mark McNay, Senior VP and GM, SMC Packaging Group. “We’ve been able to present some (inside print) things to customers that they didn’t themselves think of, and they saw what we could do, and it’s kind of an ‘ah-ha’ moment when they realized they could incorporate that into their product, and what it would do to help market and promote a product they’re trying to sell, because after all – that’s what we’re trying to do – help our customers be more suc- cessful and profitable,” said Ausburn. The versatility of the G-Grafix machines expands the offerings of a company like SMC Packaging Group. “It’s given us the opportunity to compete with really anybody that we choose to compete with from the standpoint of quality and service, flexibility, and this new equipment that we have installed has been instrumental in our ability to grow as an organization,” said McNay. The G-Grafix rotary die-cutter’s flexographic print sta- tion provides precision control of registration by a harmon- ic drive register system. Impression, sheet transfer and ink metering provide the capability to print top quality, val- ue-added process, fine screen and block work with quick and easy changeover for specific die cutting jobs, result- ing in less unplanned downtime. Supporting e-commerce trends can also include man- ufacturing smaller boxes. The Twin Box Slitter® demon- strates BW Papersystems’ continuous dedication to improvement and customer success. This converting ma- chine is installed in line with mid-size flexo folder gluers, which enables box plants to double the production of their mid-size FFGs by cutting the bundles in two.

Is Your Fiber-Based Packaging Recyclable? Try The Paper Packaging Recyclability Test Newly developed methods and specifications will help drive the develop- ment of innovative uses for fiber-based packaging by providing guidance on what new fiber-based packaging meets recyclability needs.

Introduction to Paper Packaging Recyclability Test Methods & Specifications was created through a col- laboration between the American Forest & Paper As- sociation (AF&PA), Fibre Box Association (FBA), and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). Corrugated is the most recycled packaging mate- rial on the planet, with a recycling rate of around 90% for the last decade. Many companies are evaluating

the benefits of fiber-based packaging as an alternative to other materials in niches, such as flexible packaging for beverage containers and food pack- aging. Knowing if a package can be converted to usable fiber at paper mills without causing operational issues can make the repulping process more manageable with less waste. Recyclability testing is a tool that helps the traditional recycling stream connect the dots from packaging design to pro- cessing and, ultimately, end markets. This project aims to create a quick, reliable, repeatable, and reproducible test of recycling for fiber-based packaging. There are two critical parts to recyclability testing – test method and result thresholds. Many recyclability test methods have been developed, and all generally can be broken down into five steps: • Sample Preparation • Pulping • Coarse Screening • Fine Screening • Analysis of Handsheet / Test Report Recyclability testing can provide an analysis of many key indicators but includes, at the very least, these six: • The extent to which the fibers can be separated • Visual appearance when formed into sheets • Level of rejects from screening • Level of disrupting materials (i.e., adhesives, metals, plastic film) • Level of dissolved or colloidal solids resulting from non-paper compo- nents • Strength(s), which vary depending on the intended end products For more information about labs certified for recyclability testing, con- tact one of the following organizations that have developed recyclability protocols - Fibre Box Association (FBA), Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS), and Tag and Label Man- ufacturers Institute (TLMI). For on-pack labeling organizations like How2Recycle, please reach out directly for a list of accepted protocols and vetted labs available for recy- clability testing. The paper industry aims to create a marketplace where all fiber-based packaging materials are easy to sort and recycle. Our industry epitomizes the principle of a circular economy, and this new project helps ensure that it continues. Chase Kammerer is the Technical Services Manager at Fibre Box Asso- ciation (FBA).
