Counties donate to Fort MacMurray relief area almost 230,000 hectares in size. That is twice the size of Calgary. More than 2000 homes in Fort MacMurray’s southern and southeastern residential sectors are gone. The latest insurance damage estimates for the havoc left behind by the fire is more than $9 billion.

The Ottawa Police Services’ West District Investigation Unit led the investigation and identified onemember of the trio through an audio sample. Continuing investigation, in partnership with the OPP, led to the identi- fication and arrest of the other two suspects. Police have filed more than 100 charges against the three, including publicmischief, impersonating a police officer, mischief to property, breach of probation, providing false information, and possession of a pro- hibited weapon. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell will contribute $20,000 to the relief fund aimed at helping residents of Fort MacMurray, Alberta, burned out of their homes by a massive wildfire. During itsMay 11 committee of the whole session, Counties council approved a pro- posal for the donation on behalf of its eight member municipalities. The counties join other municipal governments, the Alberta provincial government, and Ottawa in pled- ging funds for relief. Warden Guy Desjardins brought the issue up just before council went in-camera to discuss a legal item. He received unanimous support for the proposal to pledge a donation to the relief effort. Council members spent about 10 minutes discussing how large the donation would be. Themost recent media reports state that more than 80,000 people, including families with children, have fled their homes in Fort MacMurray, since the evacuation order was made for the northern Alberta town. They took refuge north and south, in various loca- tions throughout the City of Edmonton, or in the work camps of the Alberta oil sands project. A resident of Russell County is part of trio charged with a series of “swatting” calls that have plagued police inOttawa and the surrounding areas since last fall. Darren Graham, 26, of Russell, Vincent Pucci, 37, of Toronto, and Tiffany King, 27, of Etobicoke, all face multiple charges fol- lowing a joint investigation, by the Ottawa Police Service and the OPP, of a series of “swatting calls” that began in October 2015. “Swatting” is a false alarmcall for alleged critical event cases whichmight require the police tactical unit. “Swatting” refers to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit which is part of many American urban police departments. The charges against the trio concern 28 “swatting calls” to police from the beginning of October 2015 up and including the end of March to mid-April 2016. Most of the calls occurred after March 28. Almost all the calls were about alleged “critical incidents” in Ottawa and the sur- rounding area.
