– Gregg Chamberlain Alfred College plan support Alfred-Plantagenet Township council has given its formal and official support for a regional consortium’s plan for transforming the Alfred College campus into a new Community Hub and Centre for Innovation and Transformation/Technology in Agriculture (CITA). Now the township council is lobbying for support from its fellow rural municipalities in Ontario. The township has already succeeded in getting the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) to pass a unanimous vote of support during the April 26 session of counties council. Now the township seeks similar support from the Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario (AFMO). The future of college grounds and facilities remains in limbo while the provincial govern- ment follows through on its official protocol for disposing of provincial properties. ± Gregg Chamberlain

Mohawk council meeting rescheduled A planned May 10 meeting between the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake and the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) has been rescheduled. The Community of Kanesatake is experienc- ing its own serious flooding problems like other municipalities along the Ottawa River this spring. The Mohawk Council was forced to cancel plans to meet with UCPR council to discuss the potential impact of the Colacem Canada Ltd.’s proposal for a cement plant project near L’Orignal. The meet- ing between the two regional government groups will take place later in the year. The cement plant proposal is in limbo at present while the Ontario Municipal Board reviews appeal applications to the rezoning request needed for the project. ± Gregg Chamberlain No unwanted windmills The United Counties of Prescott-Russell support alternative energy projects but does not agree with having any forced on communities that do not want them. Counties council gave its support, during the April 26 session, to a resolution from the Municipality of Dutton Dunwich, which is lobbying in favour of a Private Member’s Bill from MPP Sam Oosterhoff, of Niagara-West Glanbrook. The MPP’s proposed bill, if it were passed in the provincial legislature, would have the provincial government put a stop to approvals for any wind farm proposals in municipalities which do not want them. ± Gregg Chamberlain
