FEBRUARY 8 The Battle Is His "The Lord shall fight for you' (Ex. 14: 14). He is with us to strengthen us with His wisdom and might, so that we may conquer in every satanic attack. The Son of man,who has promised to be with us, "was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil.” Therefore, we have a right to be lieve that He is by our side to guard us, guide us, and deliver us. As by faith we practice His presence, we shall realize that He is keeping us, and all the interests of our lives, in His loving care. —D on O dell S helton . FEBRUARY 9 Daily Manna "The inward man is renewed day by day" (2 Cor. 4:16). A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough today to last him for the next six months, or take sufficient air into his lungs at once to sustain life for a week to come. We must draw upon God’s boundless stores for grace from day to day, as we need it. — D. L. M oody . FEBRUARY 10 Unto the Uttermost "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make interces sion for them" (Heb. 7:25). His is such a salvation that it reaches to the uttermost of our need. . . . Oh, men and women! if you are slaves to sin—some sin which has its paralyzing grip upon you —it may be impurity, or pride, or jealousy or evil temper, or love of money, or some other sin, and your lives are being spoiled by this enslavement—would you like to be free? Well, there was once a man just like you, and out of the anguish of his soul he cried: “Oh wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me?” And even as he cried out, the light broke, and he exclaimed: “I thank God through Jesus Christ.”—W. H; A ldis . "He breaks the power of canceled sin, And sets the prisoner free." FEBRUARY 11 A Growing Revelation "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief" (1 Tim. 1:15). Here we have one phase of the pilgrim’s progress which is not often realized: least of apostles, less than the least of all the saints, chief of sinners. And how was St. Paul coming to this growing realization of the sinfulness of sin in his own life? The answer is that he was coming nearer and nearer to the Lord Jesus Christ in his con dition of life, and therefore was realizing, more and more, how unlike the Lord he was.— D onald G rey B arnhouse .

The life of the Spirit is not a life of ease and comfort; it is not sitting down and surveying life from a spiritual altitude which puts us in a superior position to any body else, and which leads us to say, “Thank God, I am not as other men are.” That is not the life of the Spirit The life of the Spirit is marked by conflict. . . So do not think this life is going to lead to an easier experience in Christian things. —A . S t . J ohn T horpe . "The same came therefore to Philip, . . . and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus" (John 12:21). Christ Himself is better than any of His blessings; better than the power, or the vic tory, or the service, that He grants. Christ creates spiritual power; but Christ is better than that power. He is God’s best; He is God; and we may have this best. —C harles G. T rumbull . It is Jesus Himself we are needing. Not blessings of knowledge or power Not great gifts of praying and praising But Jesus Himself every hour. The living, unchangeable Jesus! The Friend who is faithful indeed. My own long experience has taught me, It is Jesus Himself we all need. — S elected . "And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back . . . and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks. . . . And Jesus answering said. Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?" (Lk. 17:15-17). A very practical lesson may be gained from the account of the healing of the ten lepers by our Lord, a lesson which briefly stated is, “Be appreciative, but don’t ex pect to be appreciated.” One returned to thank the Lord, while nine showed no ap preciation whatsoever. This percentage is repeated and illustrated eve r ywhe r e. “Where are the nine?” Are you one of the unappreciative ones? The one who return ed was blessed beyond the nine, and so it always is. Furthermore, the Lord Jesus, though not appreciated Himself, was ap preciative of the one who returned. Surely the Christian should follow his Lord! — J ohn A. H ubbard . FEBRUARY 15 The Christian Accent “Thou also art one of them; for thy speech betrayeth thee” (Matt. 26:73). Remember, there is nothing more self- revealing than a man’s speech; . . . God grant then that we may all be distin guished amid the Babel confusion of the world around us by the accent of our speech, the speech that we talk quite natur ally and unaffectedly, the speech of Christ’s redeemed, the speech of those who have been with Jesus and have learned of Him, yes, the speech of men and women for whom to live is Christ. — D onald D avidson .
