“When I first arrived in Laguna some 27 years ago, I was enchanted by the history of the first members of the Laguna Art Association, such as, the Paynes, the Wendts, Watchel, Cuprien, on and on. I romanticized the idea, yet it was true! That, enforced by my reading Steinbeck's works of the California Coast, had me in a trance. After all of my years there, the trance hasn’t diminished. The
painting in this Legacy show began as all of my works do. I created a study on location, which is always a challenge technically, but as long as the spirit and truth of what you are attempting is genuine, you have an opportunity to express yourself in the work. That's what occurred the day I did the "on location" painting that one "Best of Show". I was fortunate to be "in the zone" while that sea was breaking and I did my best to capture its truth. Later in the studio, I had the opportunity to remember and explore my experience and the resulting painting is "Wind from the West”. My hope is that I have been true to my subject and able to share that truth with the viewers.”
