“Painting in the LPAPA Invitational has been a wonderful experience and is always a highlight to my year. It has been a blessing to meet so many talented artists and gain new friends. I have a very fond memory of winning the grand prize on the 20th Anniversary of the Invitational. My painting “Transitions” was painted from my host’s house which overlooked the ocean as the sun was setting. I could not have asked for a more perfect evening. It was a cool night and as I
was setting up my easel, the lights began to shine across the horizon and below. My excitement to get started was priority so I could capture what was in front of me and commit to memory. Sunsets are a magical experience, so I am always prepared with a camera or an easel to capture the moment when an evening show begins. Painting “Transitions” was not hard, I was given the perfect location, weather and an excitement to capture what was special for me. The title to the painting has a double meaning. I also had just finished treatment for cancer, and my body was accepting the new future. The sky was ending a beautiful day and subtly transitioning into a peaceful night to start a new day tomorrow. When I start a new painting, the title comes to me as I create, and so “Transitions” was born.”

“My first Best in Show award winning painting, 2021's "Valley Below," was painted at Top of the World Park in Laguna Beach. I had painted at that location previously, but always looking west toward the ocean. In 2021, Linda Stern suggested I check out the sunrise from that same spot looking east. I ventured up in the dark, anticipating a beautiful sunrise, only to be met with complete cloud cover.
I painted anyway, and as luck would have it, the sun's rays broke through at just the right moment to create the image I captured. In 2024, I won again with the nocturne painting "Violet Sky Over Cliff Drive." It was painted on a foggy night, which is ideal for creating an exaggerated glow around streetlights and capturing the violet hues cast into the sky by the city below.” Carl began oil painting in 2004 at the St. Paul Art Academy, and began entering plein air events in 2010. He retired from a 25 year career in medicine in 2016, and went full time into his craft. Carl says he is fascinated by the science of color and attracted to dramatic light effects.

“Thinking back to when I painted "Pier Pleasure" I had lived a block from the Newport Pier and the Dory fleet which gave me endless material and routine trips for fish or beach walks. Intending to paint the Dory fleet for the LPAPA Invitational, I was instead drawn to this fleeting scene of a pier, bicycle and a beachgoer; that kind of unexpected moment is why I paint outdoors. I also spend much time on
California's central coast, where unspoiled land and light yield discoveries like "California Ranch" on the best days. The large tracts of land that still exist in this part of California keep me hunting for this type of inspiration.” At an early age Cosby began to draw and paint and was lucky enough to have been inspired by a grandmother who was an oil painter. Cosby travels extensively painting what he sees and feels. Bold use of color and an energetic brush stroke, combined with the truth of the place is what you will see and feel when viewing one of his paintings. As one of LPAPA’s Founders, John Cosby’s Legacy will leave a lasting impression, just like his award winning paintings.

“When I first arrived in Laguna some 27 years ago, I was enchanted by the history of the first members of the Laguna Art Association, such as, the Paynes, the Wendts, Watchel, Cuprien, on and on. I romanticized the idea, yet it was true! That, enforced by my reading Steinbeck's works of the California Coast, had me in a trance. After all of my years there, the trance hasn’t diminished. The
painting in this Legacy show began as all of my works do. I created a study on location, which is always a challenge technically, but as long as the spirit and truth of what you are attempting is genuine, you have an opportunity to express yourself in the work. That's what occurred the day I did the "on location" painting that one "Best of Show". I was fortunate to be "in the zone" while that sea was breaking and I did my best to capture its truth. Later in the studio, I had the opportunity to remember and explore my experience and the resulting painting is "Wind from the West”. My hope is that I have been true to my subject and able to share that truth with the viewers.”

“Color has emotional weight and is related to the shape of space. Drawing or painting, for me, means to look at the thing and transmit its vitality to the canvas.” Known for an engaging style and versatility in subject matter, Aimee Erickson is an internationally renowned oil painter and instructor. Her first book, Plein Air Techniques for Artists: Principles and Methods
for Painting in Natural Light , was released in 2023 to broad acclaim. Aimee is a standout at plein air painting competitions nationwide and has won too many top awards to list. She has exhibited with international plein-air groups in China, Turkmenistan, and Russia, is an inaugural member of Charlie Hunter’s En Train Air expedition, and in 1997 painted the official portrait of governor of Oregon, Barbara Roberts. She is recently a Founding Member of Arteva Master Artists Collective, a group of world-class artists painting the world through shared journeys with honesty, depth, and wonder. Erickson has a BFA in Visual Communication Design with an Illustration emphasis.

"Plein air painting asks a lot of you, not just creatively but physically. The year I won Best of Show at Laguna Plein Air was an especially demanding week. I had tweaked my neck early on and was painting through physical strain, while immersed in the pace and energy of the event. On the final evening, called a close friend back in Colorado. She reminded me to set aside outcomes
and paint one piece from a deeper, more intuitive place. Shortly after, I saw an extraordinary sunset, pulled over, and painted it quickly on a small panel. With no plan beyond responding to the moment, the painting flowed. Winning Best of Show with that piece was a tremendous honor. It reaffirmed for me the value of painting from that deeper place, and trusting it when it appears." Jane Hunt is known for her serene tonal landscapes which offer viewers a gentle place to rest. Her work is consistently ranked among the most awarded contemporary artists in the United States.

“I have always loved painting the figure. And it's worked so conveniently participating in the LPAPA Invitational. Ray would go out and paint the landscape and I would stay at the hotel and paint the kids. One year my sister joined us with her kids, but I was a bit panicked because none of the kids were up for posing. So I sheepishly asked my sister if she could do it, and I promised to position her in a way that would allow her to watch the kids at the water’s edge. I placed her under a favorite yellow
parchment umbrella with her head propped on a floral pillow. It wasn't a large painting, but I decided anyways to include this with my other entries. During the awards ceremony there was a glitch with the slide show and the painting of my sister popped up just for a second. I was standing with Ray thinking that was some sort of a mistake, but how lucky I'd be to win even an Honorable Mention. As the awards continued I thought there had to have been some mistake. I thought amongst all the great works entered there was no way I would earn 3rd or 2nd, let alone 1st Place. As they announced that I had won Best in Show I was dumbfounded and so grateful. But, the greatest reward of this was upon returning to our hotel, everyone was in one room, and Ray said, "Your mom won first prize!” Everybody screamed with joy, and I know how happy this made my sister, Tammi.”

~ Jason Li ~ “I painted Catching Sunset during the LPAPA Plein Air Invitational 2025. Newport Harbor, with the Balboa Pavilion in the background, is an iconic and historic scene. I wanted to capture it at the height of sunset’s brilliance while adding my own personal flair. Before beginning, I sat quietly and observed the scene for a while. I watched sailboats drifting by, birds flying freely overhead, and people walking their dogs along the beach. I wanted all of these elements to become
part of the painting, because the details help tell the story. I rarely include human figures in my landscapes, but the figure walking with an energetic, tail-wagging dog created a subtle sense of playfulness. Together with the sailboat chasing the fading light, these moments brought a lively dynamic to the composition. Plein air painting has always been my passion. It is the most direct way for me to connect with nature. The quick decisions, decisive brushstrokes, and challenge of capturing a fleeting moment are all part of the thrill. The more I paint outdoors, the more beauty I discover within the experience. Plein air is not simply about painting what is in front of me, but about expressing what resonates emotionally in that particular moment.”

““Dana Point Tall Ship” exemplified the essential role of plein air painting in the academic training of landscape art. Plein air practice is not merely the direct recording of nature; it is a disciplined study of visual perception, compositional structure, and chromatic harmony. Working outdoors requires the artist to respond rapidly to constantly changing light, atmosphere, and environmental conditions while
making immediate decisions about composition, tonal organization, and color relationships. In contrast, my current exhibition piece, “Sailing in Newport Beach”, was completed as a studio painting. As sailboats are constantly in motion while navigating the water, it is extremely difficult to complete this subject with only direct outdoor observation. The changing reflections, shifting light and movement of the vessel require a different creative approach. Drawing upon years of plein air experience and observational knowledge, I used photographic references gathered on location and reinterpreted them in the studio environment.”

“For the first few days at the LPAPA Invitational, I travelled around the area painting some of the local subject matter. Eventually, I came across some beautiful white cliffs and immediately knew they were something I would connect with. For the remainder of the week, I went to the same location and painted the cliffs at all times of day and in different weather conditions. It was truly satisfying because though the subject was the same, the changing light and atmosphere
created a different mood with every painting. When choosing paintings to enter into the show, these were the most meaningful to me. As it turned out, all of my entries sold and “Evening Peace” won Best of Show and Patrons’ Choice Awards. I tell this story to my workshop students to make the point that you have to paint what has meaning to you, which in turn will make the painting more successful. “The Pacific!” was painted from the plein air sketch. I was driving through the hills above the ocean and came across this view. I had to paint quickly as the sun was going down, and the light was changing fast. I was interested in recreating the effect of the glare upon the ocean contrasted with the dark landscape in the foreground. For the studio painting I added the 67 Corvette to give it a little interest and color. I also had Beach Boys song in my head as I painted.

“I remember painting both of these works. “Heisler Park Sunlight” was painted during the first time I was invited to the invitational. I had been painting plein air landscapes since 1973 and Laguna Beach was the very first location I ever painted outdoors. So to be invited to such an important plein air event and to win the award was very special. I also love the Main Beach area and the park-like setting next to the beach along with a great boardwalk. Two years later I decided to set up on
the grass in the early morning to paint the backlit scene. It was quite the experience with some rather boisterous folks sitting on the benches behind me. All things that make painting outdoors challenging and interesting beyond the quickly changing light. One never gets that working on a studio landscape. My approach and thought processes have changed over the years. I have always approached the canvas in a direct and somewhat aggressive manner. In the past I stayed pretty true to the scene. Now I make more adjustments to what I'm seeing, like eliminating something that doesn't work, and color choices. I often think of a jazz musician playing the melody and then with a solo, improvising over the structure of the tune, never playing it the same way twice. That's what I hope I achieve in my work as a painter.”

“I remember the first plein air painting I did back in the 70’s out on the plains east of Denver, Colorado at the urging of a college art professor. “What am I doing?” Well, it’s now 50 years later. Am I still asking the same question? At least the results are often much more satisfactory!I did the earlier pastel from the bluI-top parkin Dana Point looking down on the harbor and further south to the public
beach. I loved the vantage point from high above. Not living on the coast, the term “red tide” didn’t strike me with the disgust that locals feel. I just liked the warm color out in the water. “Lupine and Farm” is a plein air pastel I did a year ago, my back to the Pacific, my eyes on a charmingly coastal mix of rolling hills, Eucalyptus, oaks, pasture with lupine, and a colorful weathered farmhouse. When I paint on location, I do much less editing and rearranging of parts than when in the studio. I was delighted when everything fit into my chosen format.”

“Although I have been an artist my entire life, I began plein air painting thirty years ago, surrounded by a group of friends and fellow painters here in Laguna Beach who were just establishing LPAPA. I have since been fortunate to have participated in every Invitational since its inception in 1999. The beautiful and varied scenery of Laguna Beach and the surrounding hills, valleys and coastline have given me endless inspiration
throughout the years. But it has been my fellow Invitational painters’ enthusiasm and creative spirit that that has inspired me the most. The LPAPA Invitational is the premier plein air painting event in the country and it has always been an honor to be included. My winning painting from the 25th Invitational was actually my first painting of the week, somewhat of a ‘warmup’ to get me flowing. I was on my way to a previously planned destination to paint when the view of downtown in the morning glare caught my eye. I immediately saw the scene as a finished painting in my mind, and therefore half the battle was done. The painting came together quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of pushing the paint.”

~ Joe Paquet ~ “This exhibition piece, “Sunset from Catalina”, was painted from an amazing, fleeting burst of light from Middle Ranch - something like looking off the edge of the world. I've had a long history of painting Catalina Island starting in 1997 as a guest artist with the Plein Air Painters of America.“ Joseph Paquet was born in 1962 in Patterson New Jersey to hard-working parents of immigrant stock. His childhood was one of being outdoors: wondering, wandering and day
dreaming. “It’s a great irony to now get paid for those things which got me into trouble when I was a kid," Joe says. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and credits artist-instructors John Foote, David Palladini, James McMullan with inspiring his deep love of drawing. Later he studied with John Phillip Osborne in Ridgewood, NJ and was introduced to the Prismatic Palette. "John opened a new world for me and set me on a path to painting outdoors - it was incredibly life changing”. Paquet's philosophy is one rooted in deep connection and sensitivity to his subjects. He says, "Because I work directly from nature, each painting is a chunk of my life - a piece of me and record of my experience on this earth."

“Painting St. Mary's Garden View was a bit of a task. Mostly due to the size of it, 24x36. I hadn't really painted that big on location in a show/competition like the LPAPA Invitational, but the view demanded a bigger size I thought. So I was up for the challenge, it took me four sessions of painting to finish it, fortunately the weather worked in my favor. Finding this spot was a blessing, I was
out scouting for views above downtown Laguna the week before the show started and stumbled upon it at the church. It was such a quiet peaceful spot had to paint there and the church let me park there with no hassles.” Scott is an award winning oil painter and Southern California native who has exhibited nationally throughout his career. He has a BFA from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is a Signaute Member of LPAPA and the Calfornia Art Club. Scott draws inspriation from the beauty in ordinary, everyday scenes.

~ Ray Roberts ~ “A chance phone call to Scottsdale Artists' School led us to our first year participating in the LPAPA Invitational. Peggi's cousin, Heidi Grunewald, passed our names on to the brand new Laguna Plein Air Painters Association as a recommendation in their inaugural year at the Laguna Art Museum. We were the newbies. Kids in tow, Peggi painted them on the beach. Our lives were changing in so many ways. Thank you Heidi! Plein Air painting is serious business, despite
first impressions. Creating a luminous painting requires attention to the basics while listening to your artists' voice. I have always been attracted to paintings with subjects depicting light and luminosity. This fascination has brought me to this submission for the LPAPA Legacy Show of “Afternoon Light, Main Beach” nearly 40 years later.” Ray Roberts is one of California's most respected Plein Air artists. He is best known for his seascapes, figurative work, and majestic views of California and the Southwest. Ray has participated in the LPAPA Invitational 19 times, and has won the top award a record number of 6 of those years.

“During the 2022 Laguna Invitational, I decided to visit LPAPA’s “kids paint out” event at Heisler Park. After watching the students paint their masterpieces, I was drawn to the beautiful cliffs and rocks resting in the midday sun below. Immediately, I had to set up my easel and tap into this inspirational moment. Painting from above, the poetry of the rocks and the beauty of the ocean led me to create “The Tide Abides”. The
synchronicity in the moment took over. Receiving the Best In Show Award at this event has been my biggest achievement to date in my Plein Air Painting journey.” Jeff Sewell is a distinguished Signature Member of LPAPA and has served on the LPAPA Board as the “Director of Education”, helping to pass on the history and importance of California Impressionism to hundreds of students each year with a program he instilled called “The Plein Air Project”. Jeff is also an esteemed Artist Member of the California Art Club and most recently became a recognized Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

“My work is rooted in a lifelong pursuit of beauty and the transcendent qualities of light. As a painter, I am drawn to moments where the ordinary becomes extraordinary - where shifting atmosphere, subtle color relationships, and the passage of time reveal something deeper than the surface. Travel has played a central role in shaping my vision. Whether painting remote landscapes or familiar ground.
I seek to distill the essence of a place rather than simply record it. Each painting becomes an act of interpretation-an effort to translate not only what is seen, but what is felt. The process is both observational and reflective, requiring patience, sensitivity, and a willingness to respond to the unexpected. Working primarily in oil, I am deeply influenced by the traditions of representational painting, yet I strive to bring a contemporary vitality to that lineage. My goal is not nostalgia, but continuity-to participate in an ongoing conversation about light, form, and meaning. Ultimately, my paintings are invitations: to slow down, to notice, and to reconnect with a sense of wonder in the world around us.”
