““Dana Point Tall Ship” exemplified the essential role of plein air painting in the academic training of landscape art. Plein air practice is not merely the direct recording of nature; it is a disciplined study of visual perception, compositional structure, and chromatic harmony. Working outdoors requires the artist to respond rapidly to constantly changing light, atmosphere, and environmental conditions while
making immediate decisions about composition, tonal organization, and color relationships. In contrast, my current exhibition piece, “Sailing in Newport Beach”, was completed as a studio painting. As sailboats are constantly in motion while navigating the water, it is extremely difficult to complete this subject with only direct outdoor observation. The changing reflections, shifting light and movement of the vessel require a different creative approach. Drawing upon years of plein air experience and observational knowledge, I used photographic references gathered on location and reinterpreted them in the studio environment.”
