“I remember the first plein air painting I did back in the 70’s out on the plains east of Denver, Colorado at the urging of a college art professor. “What am I doing?” Well, it’s now 50 years later. Am I still asking the same question? At least the results are often much more satisfactory!I did the earlier pastel from the bluI-top parkin Dana Point looking down on the harbor and further south to the public
beach. I loved the vantage point from high above. Not living on the coast, the term “red tide” didn’t strike me with the disgust that locals feel. I just liked the warm color out in the water. “Lupine and Farm” is a plein air pastel I did a year ago, my back to the Pacific, my eyes on a charmingly coastal mix of rolling hills, Eucalyptus, oaks, pasture with lupine, and a colorful weathered farmhouse. When I paint on location, I do much less editing and rearranging of parts than when in the studio. I was delighted when everything fit into my chosen format.”
