BOURGET | He’s been absent from the council table for awhile but Yvon Mayer figures it’s time he took a more active role again in local politics. “I want to go back,” Mayer said. “It was a super experience for me.” Mayer was a member of Rockland town council for two terms during the 1990s prior to the amalgamation of Rockland with the Township of Clarence. He is now chal- lenging incumbent Coun. Diane Choinière for the Ward 8 seat on city council. Mayer had previously put his name for the mayor’s seat, but he decided at the last minute to
run against Diane Choinière. “I feel that people need me,” he said, ad- ding that he wants to provide a ready ear to listen to the concerns of residents. “We need an ‘open door’,” Mayer said. “People need to be able to access (council).” Top priority item on his “to do” list should he win in the October ballot is to look at the situation with taxes and fees in Clarence- Rockland. “It’s the biggest priority,” he said. “I want to get it under control, at a fair level, at the inflation level.” Second is to restore harmony at the
council table, with respect between council members and with the community at large. Close behind is a review of the situation with ethics and impartiality related to both decision-making at council and how City Hall and council members treat residents and those doing business with the city. “Every taxpayer needs to be treated equally,”Mayer said. He wants a thorough review of the Onta- rio Municipal Act and related legislation so council members can be certain of their authority in their decisions. “Errors cost money,”Mayer said.
