François St-Amour sworn in as new warden of UCPR

Economic development will be priority number one for François St-Amour as he takes on themantle of warden of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell for 2018. The mayor of The Nation Municipality was acclaimed as the warden for Prescott- Russell for next year, during the Dec. 20 inaugural session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) council. During his inaugural speech, St-Amour empha- sized economic development as his chief priority for the counties during his term next year as warden. He promised support for a new directive for the UCPR economic development and tourism department to deal with electricity and natural gas supply needs for local business and industry in the region, and assist with the efforts of the eight member municipalities to develop their commercial and industrial sectors. “I also plan to ensure a continuity of cer- tain regional projects and advocacy from 2017,” said St-Amour, “such as the construc- tion of the new Prescott and Russell Resi- dence, the widening of County Road 17, our ambulances being dispatched in the City of Ottawa, fire dispatch communications within our eight municipalities, and the management of social housing and domicili- ary hostels in Prescott and Russell.” This will be St-Amour’s second term as UCPRwarden. Amour takes over the post fromGary Barton who will continue as Champlain Township’s mayoral representative on UCPR council in 2018. Barton has reconfirmed that next year will be his last year as mayor for the town-

ship, as he will not seek re-election. “It was quite a ride,” Barton said. “But I amgetting to the end of my (political) career. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s been a fun experience.”

Future université franco-ontarienne Invité à se prononcer la semaine dernière sur le projet de loi 177, Loi de 2017 pour un Ontario plus fort et plus juste (mesures budgétaires), Carol Jolin, président de l’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO), a exposé, devant le Comité permanent des finances et des affaires économiques de l’Ontario, les six recommandations de la communauté franco-ontarienne.Trois d’entre elles concernent la future université franco-ontarienne et stipulent, entre autres, que les étudiants représentent un cinquième du nombre total de membres du futur sénat de l’université, que le projet de loi définisse les termes « université mentor partenaires », « université mentor principales » et « affiliation acadé- mique » et que le comité de mise en oeuvre de l’UOF comprenne des représentants de la jeunesse et de la communauté. UCDSB re-elects chair and vice-chairs Jeff McMillan was acclaimed chair of the Board of Trustees of the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) for the 2017-18 term. McMillan, who has served as chair since December 2014, said he was gratified by the acclamation and the trust Board members have expressed in his leadership. “I have worked very hard on your behalf to represent this position with integrity and I will continue to do so,” McMillan said, via news release. The Board also acclaimed 1 st Vice-Chair Caroll Carkner, and elected incumbent 2 nd Vice-Chair David McDonald to the position for another year. Carkner has served in her current role since December 2014. McDonald has served in his current role as 2 nd vice-chair since December 2010, and previously served in the position from December 2006 to December 2008. — Alexia Marsillo
