Since he himself retired from the political arena, Lalonde has occupied himself for the most part by doing the same thing that he did when he sat in the legislature at Queen’s Park. ROCKLAND | Jean-Marc Lalonde has a new mission. “You can rest assured that I am going to get involved,” he said during a Friday morn- ing breakfast meeting in Rockland of the Upper Canada District School Board Cham- pions for Kids Foundation (UCDSB). The feisty ex-mayor, and former Liberal MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, was in- ducted April 19 as an honourary executive director of the foundation. The non-profit agency helps children in the UCDSB region who come from working-class and lower- income families live happier, healthier lives. Mark Calder, foundation publicity direc- tor, recalled the origins of the UCDSB’s non- profit charity arm in January 2008 when a member of the school district board learned that a Brockville area parent was going through some financial hardships and, as a result, the children in the family were miss- ing out on chances to get involved in orga- nized sports. A fundraising effort to provide the children with needed hockey equip- ment evolved into an organized charitable foundation with one main goal. “It was established to help kids from working families or from low-income fami- lies to take dance lessons,” Calder said, “to play sports, to do all the things that make childhood worthwhile.” Calder recalled one of his own experienc- es of the effect Champions for Kids has on students in the Upper Canada region. A boy was saved from a destiny of delinquency when the foundation helped him get in- volved in minor soccer. “It was an amazing transformation,”Calder said. “He was a kid who hadn’t made a lot of friends. Now he’s a kid who wants to play football. He’s looking at going to college, and he’s thinking about getting into the military. He’s a kid who’s got a future now.” “There are many awesome stories about how Champions for Kids has helped chil- dren,” said Mary-Lynn Wilcox, vice-principal
at Rockland District High School. She noted that the foundation supported efforts by local students to help a Rockland family left homeless last December by a house fire. Since its creation, the foundation has raised more than $400,000 for use in pro- viding sports equipment or assistance with fees for students to take part in arts and cultural programs.
