JANUARY 2019

patients, our primary goal is to get them back to exactly where they were pre- injury. With each case, we are mapping out exactly what we want to achieve with our treatment plan. This process involves breaking up our end goals into smaller, manageable steps, which makes the recovery process easier. It also enables patients to see their progress over time and, because each patient’s case is unique, intentionally spacing out the stages of rehabilitation gives my team and I the opportunity to fully understand the injury and the necessary treatment it requires. I use the same approach outside of work as well. Over the years, I’ve found that, in addition to setting up measurable goals, I aim to achieve a small amount of progress each day. Many people are familiar with the book, “Atomic Habits,” in which the author, James Clear, highlights this idea. He claims the most important aspect of goal setting isn’t reaching the goal itself but setting up a system to get 1 percent closer each day. This means you have to divide your overarching goal into smaller goals you can meet daily. For example, if your goal is to run a half-marathon in 2019, you can’t just lace up your sneakers, hit the pavement, and get through the 13 miles without breaking a sweat. You’ll have to focus on incremental progression by starting with one mile and working your way up. If you are the resolution-setting kind — or even if you aren’t — my team and I at the Louisville Sports & Injury Center encourage you to use 2019 to make your objectives more manageable and reevaluate them as frequently as possible. If you need some encouragement along the way, you know where to find us! Happy 2019!

A Great Approach to 2019: How to Make This Year Better Than the Last

This time of year, there is an overload of articles concerning the subject of New Year’s resolutions. In these articles, the alleged experts tell us which goals we should set and how to go about achieving them. Some remind us about the statistics showing how few people actually keep their resolutions — the percentage is so low that many people “When my team and I are working with patients, our primary goal is to get them back to exactly where they were pre-injury.”

have decided to opt out of January goal setting entirely, as they know they will fail to follow through. Self-improvement is the common theme accompanying New Year’s resolutions, and everyone can agree it is a noble idea. What separates us from other creatures on the planet is not our advanced languages or our abilities to learn new tricks, but rather our capabilities to rise above our instinctive reactions and make decisions that will produce better outcomes. And that’s what goal setting is all about. From both a personal and professional standpoint, goals are important to me. When my team and I are working with

“Make a face like that, and it’ll stay that way forever.” You may have heard something like this from Mom’s book of wisdom. Maybe you never disputed the idea that mother knows best. But as you grew up, it slowly became clear that hair doesn’t grow back faster and thicker if you shave it, cracking your knuckles doesn't cause arthritis, and gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for months after you swallow it. After a whirlwind of wives’ tales over the years, many common claims have been put under scrutiny. Wives' tales have been known as pseudoscience and blind intuition, but even as many were disproved, some surprisingly proved to hold weight. Here are three wives’ tales that have proven to be true. Garlic Cures Colds For decades, moms have professed the healing properties of garlic, suggesting it can cure colds and help the body fight sickness. It turns out they were absolutely right. Garlic has antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system and nutrients that help combat illnesses. The effects of garlic can actually be more effective than over-the-counter flu medications. Some studies show that regular consumption of raw garlic lessens the likelihood of getting a cold, so if you feel a tickle in your throat, try a clove before you open the medicine cabinet. Heartburn Means a Hairy Baby It’s hard to list wives’ tales without bringing up one about pregnancy. Many are solely based on intuition, but a few that sound odd are legitimate. In 2007, a study done by Johns Hopkins attempted to debunk the myth that heartburn during pregnancy would mean a hairy baby at birth. Instead of proving it wrong, they found that 82 percent of women with severe heartburn during pregnancy gave birth to hairy babies. Turns out the hormones that cause heartburn in pregnant women also affect fetal hair growth. Joint Pain Predicts the Weather Did you ever look at your mom with skepticism when she would predict rain because her knees hurt? If so, you might owe your mom an apology, because there is a scientific connection. The drop in barometric pressure that’s common during storm weather causes pain in arthritic joints. MOM REALLY DOES KNOW BEST 3 Wives’ Tales Proven True

When a patient is involved in a serious automobile accident, their first step toward recovery is finding a chiropractor who can help them get rid of any lingering pain. Unfortunately, this can sometimes mean accruing mountains of confusing paperwork. Then, in addition to navigating the physical and emotional toll that an accident causes, they are mentally stressed trying to combat the confusing insurance terminology. Fortunately for our patients here at Louisville Sports & Injury Center, we have Kaila Edlin, who functions as our patient advocate.

In this role, Kaila acts as a liaison for patients. She helps them with their insurance verification, legal inquiries, and any other questions or concerns they might have. Serving as an advocate for these patients, Kaila enjoys the position because she's “able to get to know each patient individually, listen to their story, help solve any lingering confusion, and help them get back to normal life.” Kaila knows that when patients make an appointment to see Dr. Kelly, the vast majority of them will enter the office in extreme pain. Kaila plays a vital role in the recovery process because she relieves the stress of paperwork for our patients. Kaila has served as a patient advocate for 11 years and has worked at our office here in Louisville for seven years. While she has ample experience in this role, her choice to pursue a career in chiropractic was solidified in her younger years. “My grandpa was a chiropractor, so I received wellness care from him my whole life,” she says. “I grew up understanding and actually feeling the benefits, so I knew I wanted to get in that role myself.

Because I truly do believe in this kind of care, I feel fulfilled going into work each day.” When Kaila isn’t at the office, she spends lots of her time crafting. In fact, she says that decorating the office during the holiday season is one of her favorite activities. “The rest of the team and I work together to give the office the great holiday look,” she says. “Check out the awesome tree that Katherine made last year! It turned out so great, we keep it up all year round!”

3 Ways the Winter Weather Helps You Burn Calories SHOVELING, SCRAPING, AND SHIVERING

2. Scraping

Winter can make it hard to stay physically fit. Between the aversion to stepping outside onto your ice-covered porch and the urge to drink that third cup of hot chocolate, these winter months can lead to unwanted weight gain. Nowadays, people will try almost anything to get rid of those extra pounds — yoga with goats, hula hoop fitness routines, and even underwater spinning classes. Believe it or not, you’re already working harder than you think this time of year. Here are three ways the winter weather helps you burn calories. 1. Shoveling Love it or hate it, if you live in an area with a lot of snowfall, shoveling is a necessary chore every time it snows. While the repetition associated with this task bothers a lot of people, according to a Harvard study, you actually burn approximately 230 calories for every 30 minutes you shovel.

In addition to shoveling snow, you can also get a workout by scraping those layers of ice off your windshield. In fact, you can burn up to 56 calories during a 15-minute scrape session. What’s more, you can’t slack off and skip this activity; it’s a necessary part of your morning routine. 3. Shivering Your body works hard to maintain a healthy temperature, and when that freezing wind rolls in, you’ll likely notice your body start to shiver. Shivering is a physiological response that produces heat through small, rapid muscle movements. It also assists with weight loss; you can burn up to 100 calories in 15 minutes of shivering. Of course, you should never purposefully make yourself chilly just to shed a few pounds, but if you have to be outside for a prolonged period of time this winter, know that your body is helping you out in more ways than one.
