He noted, however, that no permits are cur- rently needed to clear-cut. “I’mnot sure what we can do about it at this point,” stated ChamplainMayor Gary Barton. “I am not prepared to make a bylaw against tree cutting at this point. But, when you drive out of town and see that land, it is sickening. We have to do something.” Perrault suggested concerned residents write letters to PrimeMinister Justin Trudeau, and theMinister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna. “Maybe they don’t know what is going on over here,” said Perrault. “If we all get together and send a bunch of letters, maybe they will do some- thing.” Mayor Barton said the clear-cutting was going on all over Ontario, not just here. He agreed letters might help and passed amotion for the Township to send a letter toMPP Grant Crack requesting something be done. “You know, Mr. Perrault, we share your concerns,” saidMayor Barton. “You should be writing to the province.” Council member GeraldMiner suggested that neighbouring townships get a copy of the letter along with a request to send one of their own. “The South Nation Conservation Autho- rity has a very good tree planting program,” concluded Mayor Barton. “We have to deve- lop some sort of positive approach to this problem.”

Baril stated in a telephone interview that the trees cut along Highway 34 were pretty much dead because of a parasite called the emerald ash borer (EAB). The EAB is a green jewel beetle that feeds on ash trees. “I don’t knowwhy the guy is upset,” conti- nued Baril. “There were parasites in 75 per cent of the trees. All the trees were basically dead, so we cut themall.The land will bemade into agricultural land.The personwho is protesting
