ROCKLAND | Students with artistic souls put it all out for display at the first Arts Night at Rockland District High School. Triumphs in sport are always in the news at the high school but a famous Latin prov- erb about “mens sana in corpora sano” translates as “a healthy mind in a healthy body” and arts teacher Laura Cranstone and instructors in the humanities at RDHS
are proud to share what their students, many of whom are also involved in sports, have accomplished with paint and music and dance. “They had some really great acts,” said Cranstone. Arts Night is the brainchild of Kia Korde- lainen, a senior RDHs student with a passion for art. Her main goal with the event was to give the art scene at her school a more pub- lic face. “To me, it’s really important,” Kortelainen said. “It’s spreading creativity. Since I was a kid, I have always loved the arts.” The May 30 evening event also doubled as a fundraiser for the art, music, and drama programs and clubs at the school. About $500 was collected through admission fees, separate donations, and sale of items through a silent auction.
