The role.

Principal duties & responsibilities The role holder will be responsible for: • The physical environment, physical resource strategy and planning, estates strategy, Facilities & Building Services, Projects & Capital Development, Catering & Commercial, Accommodation & Residential Life, Safety & Business Continuity, Environment & Sustainability and Security & Community Safety • Promoting efficiency and flexibility in the use of physical resources and services, optimising the use of physical assets and providing for staff and students a world class teaching and research environment, with an improved sense of community that enhances the general quality of University life • Providing strong strategic leadership, management and coordination of service provision • Developing Professional Service level KPIs against which the performance of the directorate will be measured in line with cost parameters and service level agreements • Developing an Estates Strategy that supports the University’s Strategic Plan and, via the masterplan providing a framework for the future development of the University Estate. In addition, ensure that development opportunities are identified to assist funding and development of the Estate, increasing value where applicable • Leading the development and management of the University’s estate, related resources and business activities to provide a physical support environment commensurate with the University’s strategic aims and its mission of delivering excellence in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and associated commercial activity • Providing innovative, comprehensive

and integrated resource plans to support the delivery of the University strategy whilst ensuring departmental colleagues are equipped with the competencies and skills required for delivery • Leading, developing and empowering the Estates & Campus Services leadership team, ensuring the delivery of effective and efficient services and fostering an inclusive and high performing culture • Identifying and evaluating risks and options, and developing operational strategies to manage and mitigate risk and ensure compliance with statutory obligations. Be aware of any impending legislative, statutory and national changes that may affect the University’s estate and campus services • Managing high-quality, cost-effective, customer oriented services which contribute optimally to the achievement of the University’s mission • Contributing to the University Leadership Team and Operational Directors Group, chairing or participating in a number of senior committees and presenting regularly at Board level committees on the Professional Service performance and strategic direction • Providing guidance and support to the Chief Operating Officer and act as deputy, as appropriate, at key meetings or for agreed tasks • Ensuring that commercial opportunities are identified and exploited appropriately • Ensuring that an excellent range of student and commercial facilities and services are promoted, and managed in a cost effective, customer-responsive way which meets student and staff needs and promotes the University’s competitive position • Leading the improvement of the University’s environmental sustainability, in terms of carbon neutrality, energy reduction and water consumption and efficient waste management, whilst working with the local authority and strategic partners to deliver

Northampton’s Sustainability Strategy • Championing strategic sustainability throughout the institution, ensuring the UN Sustainable Development Goals are embedded in teaching, research and operations • Setting the strategic direction for health and safety management across the institution, maintaining high standards of health and safety practice to foster and develop a positive safety culture • Ensuring an appropriate framework is delivered for incident preparedness and business continuity throughout the institution thereby ensuring the University is able to continue with its core activities during periods of disruption • Regularly reviewing Estates and Campus Service staffing to ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiency is delivered whilst providing high quality leadership and management for all staff in the department • Representing the University in dealings with local authorities, NHS, funding bodies, and other external organisations, participating in local and regional committees, building strong working relationships with these external bodies to the benefit of the University • Developing and delivering strategies to increase short and long-term cash flows from the University’s physical assets, meeting targets set within the Financial Strategy • Developing and maintaining a strong working relationship with the Students’ Union, Trade Unions and staff networks, the University’s student and staff body, and other student and staff representatives in order to ensure services provided meet their needs and support key security and welfare requirements • Working with other senior staff to ensure that the support infrastructure and service offering to our staff, our students and sponsors is sector-leading, accessible and user focused.

Accountable for Estates & Campus Services (including Facilities & Building Services, Projects & Capital Development, Catering & Commercial, Accommodation & Residential Life, Safety & Business Continuity, Environment & Sustainability and Security & Community Safety) Overall purpose As a member of the University Leadership Team the post-holder will lead the successful delivery of the University’s ambitious estate, commercial, and facilities development plans in the context of the University’s strategy. The Director will balance strategic leadership with innovation and operational delivery, building strategic partnerships and relationships with internal and external stakeholders and taking responsibility for delivering a complex portfolio of development, innovation, improved user experience and value for money. The Director of Estates & Campus Services will be responsible for overseeing the physical estate (maintenance, refurbishment and capital projects), facilities, space management, student residences, hospitality and conferencing, sports, security, catering and other ancillary services. The Director will be responsible for a large and diverse team.
