PLANTAGENET | Got what it takes to be a strong man? Someone with muscles that wouldmake Popeye jealous? Able to leap tall objects in a single bound? Then the organizers of the Annual Plantage- net Bean Festival need you! The Fourth Annual Plantagenet Bean Fes- tival is all about strength. Men and women who have strong cooking skills and strong arms to outperform the competition both in the kitchen and on stage. Jean-Fran ç ois Caron, Canada’s Strongest Man, is the guest star at this year’s Bean Fes- tival as the reigning Canadian strongman champion both displays his own muscular prowess and serves as host for a strongman competition at the Plantagenet Municipal Park over the Sept. 20 weekend. The display of feats of strength continues the tradition of a family-fun atmosphere during the bean festival festivities. “Last year our visitors really enjoyed the lumberjack and strongman competitions,” said Alain Lapens é e, festival organizer and co-owner of La Binerie, “so we’re raising the bar with the presence of Canadian cham- pion Jean-Fran ç ois Caron.” The strongman competition is open to amateur entries only and all participants will have a chance for a few hours with Caron for advice and instruction on tech- niques before the competition begins. The cut-o! point for entrants is an even dozen who will test their muscle and mettle in "ve di!erent events. Competition registration is online at www.festivaldelabine.ca. The “friendly lumberjack” competition also returns along with a visit from Michel Pr é vost with stories and facts about Joseph Montferrand, Canada’s legendary lumber- jack, often considered to be the real-life inspiration for the tall tales of America’s

Paul Bunyan. Laurent Glande will also be on hand for an evening of storytelling during the festival. Those looking for more less strenuous activities during the BeanFest may want to consider the “all you can eat” beans o!ering from the masterchefs of the festival. “We’ll serve our traditional lard recipe and our breakfast recipe, which is a bit sweeter,” said Lapens é e. “Of course the beans will be served with ketchup, onions, and Betty rolls.” Those with the culinary skills and a hun- ger for a kitchen challenge are invited to sign up for “My Grandmother’s Beans Are Best!” recipe competition. Close to 30 cooks with award-winning traditional recipes are expected to take part in any one of three classes: professional, amateur, or social club. Both judges and the general public are in- vited to sample the o!erings and o!er their opinions on who has the best bean recipe. Deadline for entry registration is Sept. 15. During the rest of the weekend the Bean- Town stage features a marquee line-up of local musical talent, including Caribou, John & Biz, and the Baloose Band. The Heri- tage Hands Ottawa Drum Club and Audaci- t é will provide busker-style entertainment. Festival entry wristbands in advance are available at La Binerie and le D é panneur L éger in Plantagenet, Les Beaux Frères convenience store in St- Isidore, or by phone to 613-673-4383.
