Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault visited Atocas Bay to announce that the Government of Canada is investing $5.6 million over three years in a partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada. “Restoring wetlands, such as this one, is good for Canadians because it means they help in our fight against climate change while giving the natural environment near our communities the best chance to thrive,” said Minister Steven Guilbeault. “Wetlands are carbon sinks, which is good for climate change. Wetlands clean water, and potable water is their residue,» said Roger d’Eschambault, President of Ducks Unlimited Canada. “Without the federal government, we could never have achieved the success on Canadian soil that we have had in 80 years”. The funds will be used to restore and conserve degraded wetland and upland habitats, acquire habitats that are at high risk of being lost due to land use change, and acquire habitats to allow for the in-migration of several bird species.
