MAR 2020

Sometimes, an undesirable event happens to you out of the blue. Recently, for example, we lost a talented paralegal who I had no idea was looking for a position elsewhere. When they told me they were leaving, I was shocked and dismayed. It caught me completely by surprise, and though I did my best to get through the conversation without revealing my distress, I went immediately to my office after speaking to them. I closed the door, sat at my desk, and had a pity party for myself. This great person was leaving, we were in a pinch, and I was bummed the heck out. After a short period of time, however, I snapped out of it. Once I changed my perspective, I realized that the paralegal was doing something to improve their career. My office was a stepping stone on a journey to creating a better life for themselves and their family. Who am I to be angry about that? I’ve transitioned careers and workplaces before, so I know what it’s like to see a chance for yourself and take it. However jarring the transition was — and I still believe it could’ve been handled much better — an entrepreneur can’t fault their team for trying to grow their own careers. I’m trying to grow my firm, and it would be hypocritical of me to resent my team for working on their own growth and advancement. With a fresh mindset, I realized that the challenge of losing one paralegal is an opportunity to hire another of an even higher caliber. I’ve learned that the need to always hire better is one of the great challenges of running a business. Our clients deserve the best possible experience, and it’s our job to constantly raise the bar in terms of what that means. A lot of this comes down to surrounding myself with the right people. When you get good ones, you want ‘em to stay as long as possible. And when a good one goes, you need to fill that gap with a stronger candidate than before. No two people are alike, and everyone brings unique skills to their position, but by ever-increasing our hiring standard, we ensure our quality of work never dips. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU CHALLENGES MAKE OPPORTUNITIES

In all aspects of life, it’s beneficial to maintain this attitude. Life follows its own rules and can even change the rules as it goes along. Certain situations render us powerless before leaving us to pick up the pieces. When this happens, it’s easy to hang our heads and sulk. The “woe is me” attitude never accomplishes anything. When something bad happens to us, when a challenge presents itself, we have to see it as an opportunity to grow and become better. Otherwise, it’s likely to overwhelm us. I get to watch this firsthand all the time because nobody wants to get into a car accident. It is the very definition of an uncontrollable situation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from it. Dealing with the aftermath of an accident can give you the chance to learn more about the law and medicine, improve your driving habits for the better, and put you in touch with an attorney, which is something most people don’t do unless they have to. These experiences can enrich your life, and going through an accident can shape your sense of resolve and determination. Now, I’m not here saying everyone should seek out terrible events in order to steel themselves for the future. I’m just pointing out that when we improve as people, it’s not usually because everything’s going rosy. If you keep this in mind the next time an unexpected calamity occurs, it will be a lot easier to see the challenge for what it is: an opportunity.

bracket) deserves a bigger reward. Offer them the chance to see a movie of their choice in theaters or to eat a meal at their favorite restaurant.

elevate their interest, turn each March Madness matchup into a little party. It doesn’t have to be fancy; make fun snacks to eat while you watch or bet pieces of candy on who will have the most points to create great family bonding opportunities.

One of the greatest things about March Madness is that you don’t have to be a huge college basketball fan to get in on the fun. Kids of all ages can fill out brackets — or have a parent fill one out for them — and watch their picks duke it out on the court. While healthy competition among family members can be fun all on its own, check out the following tips if you’re looking to go the extra mile and reap as much fun from March Madness as you can.

Create a learning opportunity.

Learning math or geography might not sound like your child’s idea of fun, but it can be when they learn it through the lens of March Madness. See if your kids would be interested in understanding the inner workings of the ranking system or studying where some of the qualifying colleges are located on a map of the United States. They may find it so interesting that they don’t even realize they’re learning valuable skills.

Reward the winners with prizes.

Offer prizes to each round winner as well as the overall bracket winner to get the whole family involved. Small prize ideas for each round can include a homemade dinner of the winner’s choice, a week’s supply of their favorite snack, or a coupon for getting out of a chore. Whoever wins the whole tournament (or makes it the furthest with their

Turn each game into an event.

Not every kid may like watching basketball, but if they fill out a bracket, then they might gain at least a passing interest in who will win each game. To

At this point, you may be wondering if there are situations where somebody has too much insurance. THE DANGERS OF TRAILING CLOSELY

Who knew that not all shoes were created equal? For as long as I can remember, I’ve been gnawing on human footwear. Until recently, it was a carefree delight that never caused anyone harm. But one day, I chewed on Melissa’s fanciest pair of shoes. And unlike old sneakers, which are pretty durable, these shoes crunched apart like a piece of celery. The word I think I heard her use was “unsalvageable.” Needless to say, that was a hard lesson learned. However, which types of shoes are acceptable chew toys isn’t the only thing I’ve learned. On two occasions not long ago, I went face-to-tail with a small, black-and-white creature, and both times, I came out worse for wear. The first time I saw the cool-looking critter, I started to follow it as closely as possible As I approached, the little thing let out a spray into the air. I don’t think I’ve ever smelled something so awful in my entire life. I went home with my head hung in shame, unsure of what happened. Judging by the looks on my humans’ faces, the stench was just as bad as I’d imagined. You would think this would stop me from ever doing that again, but it didn’t. I saw another of those animals, which I now know are called skunks, and gave pursuit again. Same pattern, same result. It was a classic fool-me-once situation, and I was the fool. I knew exactly what would happen if I trailed too close, but I did it anyway. Not the smartest idea in the world. I see humans do the same thing all the time in those big metal boxes they zoom around in. One will follow another way closer than is necessary for any number of reasons. Maybe they’re in a rush, or perhaps they want to read a bumper sticker or vanity plate that looks neat from afar. Then, the car in front will stop suddenly, and the one behind it will slam into it. The human driving the second car is left with a lot more than a foul odor; they’ll be at fault for an accident and have to deal with the consequences.

• 1 large egg • 2 tbsp honey • 1/2 cup milk (replace with lactose-free milk for lactose- intolerant pups)

DIRECTIONS

WE WANT YOU TO THINK OF US AS YOUR LAW FIRM. If you have a legal matter that needs attention, let us know. If we can’t handle the matter, we will refer you to a firm that can. Please feel free to refer us to your friends and family for their legal needs. We welcome the opportunity to help. Pro Tip: To keep cookies fresh, don’t turn them all into sandwiches at the same time. Wait to put peanut butter between cookies until you’re ready to treat your dog. With this method, cookies will stay fresh for up to 2 weeks. 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. 2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients, mixing until soft dough forms. 3. Flour countertop, then roll dough to be 1 inch thick. Use 1 1/2-inch circle-shaped cookie cutter to cut dough into circles. Use all dough. 4. Bake for 10–12 minutes until cookies are an even color on top. (Note: Cookies will lighten in color as they cook.) Carefully remove from oven and transfer to wire rack to cool. 5. Smear a little peanut butter in the center of 2 cookies to make a sandwich, and serve to your favorite pooch!

Here’s hoping both humans and I will learn to keep a safe distance from the others we see on our travels.

ANOTHER SLICE OF PI(E)

THE SWEETEST WAYS TO CELEBRATE PI DAY

Break out your calculators and grab your aprons because it’s almost Pi Day! This holiday has gained popularity among mathematicians and bakers alike — two groups that rarely overlap. Pi Day is March 14, which, when written numerically, is 3/14, the first three digits of the mathematical constant pi. Pi is special because it’s used to calculate the circumference of a circle. This might not sound like a big deal, but pi is used in engineering, construction, GPS, motors, power generation, and even television! If we hadn’t calculated pi, none of these achievements would be possible. Pi is pretty important, and it’s definitely worth celebrating! Here are two ways you can get in on the fun. LEARN TO RECITE PI Pi has fascinated mathematicians for centuries because it’s an irrational number, meaning the digits go on forever. If you want to try your hand at memorizing some of the numbers, here are the first 50 decimal digits of pi (with spaces, so they’re easier to remember!).

the Guinness Book of World Records, the record is currently held by Rajveer Meena, who recited pi to the 70,000th digit on March 21, 2015. And he did it all while blindfolded! EAT SOME PIE Another popular way to enjoy Pi Day is to bake and eat pie. This dessert is perfect because it’s both a homophone (same pronunciation as “pi” but with a different spelling and meaning) and a circle. Challenge your friends to a pie- baking contest, or buy your favorite pie from the store and have a pie- eating contest. And, while this may be a controversial stance, we believe pizza pie deserves a place in Pi Day celebrations, too.
