EDITORIAL (continued) the law which allows th is condition to continue and flourish! It is this situation which has handicapped and ham strung our police departments and made them well-nigh impotent in handling th is phase of th is forth com ing “civil war.” One scarcely ever reads about the courageous way in which police face death from snip ers and mobsters in their effort to do their duty in keeping law and pro tecting the citizens. B u t let a police man shoot a mobster in the line of duty and the news media of our coun try, newspapers, radio, and televi sion play it up fo r all that it is worth, jo in ing in the mobsters’ howl of “police b ru tality!” C ity and district attorneys find it extremely difficult to get a conviction against these mobsters because of the recent deci sions handed down by the liberal ma jo rity of the Supreme Court. A s a result the judges on the lower courts may not convict according to their interpretations of the law but must abide by the legal interpretations of the higher-ups. Because of these restrictions on police activities, it was charged by a member of the Detroit police depart ment that “all men were given shot guns, then told, ‘Don’t load them; put them in the trunks of you r cars, because if these people see them, they m ight get excited and nasty.’ A fte r the first night, we were told to take containing action to hold the riot w ith in a one hundred block area. We were told ‘don’t go in, don’t do any thing, don’t shoot.’ Looting seemed no longer to be a crime . . . people just walked in and out of the broken w indows w ith their arm s full.” T h is utterly te rrifyin g condition can be laid directly at the door of the Su preme Court through its interpreta tion of certain sections of the B ill of R ights. And such interpretations are in complete violation of more than a hundred seventy-five years of Am e ri can h istory and constitutional ju ris prudence. W hat has all of th is to do w ith the sincere church member, who is de sirous of liv in g h is life according to the teachings of the W ord of God? O f course, we can all p ray and this we must do w ith all of the earnest ness of our beings. Bu t also we must take greater interest in seeing to it that our elected representatives at all governmental levels demand that the historic C h ristian Am erican way of life be maintained. We must in sist that they pass whatever laws are necessary to see that th is is carried out. Further, at the polls we must re pudiate those at every opportunity who would mollycoddle the lawless (Continued on p. 46)
