BUILD IT. PROTECT IT. PRESERVE IT.

daughter was born, we haven’t needed day care because my mom stays with her every day while my wife and I are at work. I am so thankful that my daughter gets to have a relationship with her grandmother, and my mom has already started teaching her just like she taught me. Right now, our daughter is learning how to say grace before a meal.

THEY BOTH PUSH ME FORWARD

Even though my mother has done so much for me and continues to do all she can for my family,

CELEBRATING MY WIFE AND MY MOTHER ON MOTHER’S DAY

I can’t celebrate the mothers in my life without celebrating my wife, too. She has been beyond supportive of me

in my career. She dropped the life that she had in Akron to move to Wintersville with me when I started my practice. Running your own practice can sometimes feel like you’re on call 24/7,

My mother and my wife have done so much to help, love, and support me over the years that I don’t know where I would be without them. They’ve both changed my life drastically and for the better. Whether it was giving me every advantage I needed to succeed in school or leaving behind their life in another city to go with me as I started my own practice, I could never show enough appreciation for everything they have done for me. My mother always emphasized the importance of education to me and my brother. She wanted us to do the best we could do so that we would succeed in life. That emphasis definitely fostered in me a desire to do well in my academics. But my mom went even further than just telling us to do our homework. When I was in middle school, I had a lot of trouble with algebra. I had been a straight A student for my entire life, but algebra was my first C. Instead of just telling me to study harder, Mom got me a tutor. The tutor helped me understand algebra, and my mom made sure I went to every tutoring session on time. By the time I got to high school, math was one of my favorite subjects, and I was so adept at it that I started tutoring other students myself! My mom went to extreme lengths to make sure I was academically successful, and I am extremely grateful for how much she cared.

and I’m often meeting clients at incredibly low points in their lives. This combination can take an emotional toll on me and my family, but my

wife is incredibly supportive and amazing at creating a comfortable environment in the midst of all the strife. She

supports me in my business ideas but also knows when to keep me grounded. She makes sure I spend quality time with our daughter, and that I remember that family is the most important thing in life.

I’m thankful that my mother and my wife have a good relationship with one another. I feel like I always hear horror stories about spouses despising their in-laws, but we don’t have that in my family. I’m incredibly grateful that they’re both in my corner, pushing me forward, and I love them both very much.

I am also thankful for how she has gone to extreme lengths to help my wife and me. Ever since our

Your estate plan is far more than just a set of documents. It’s a declaration of what you find most important and a roadmap of the legacy you’d like to leave. Not only does a proper estate plan ensure that your loved ones will be taken care of when you’re gone, but it also allows you to make an impact on the wider world through charitable giving. Many avenues exist for making planned gifts to nonprofits, but here are some of the basics on how to make giving a part of your plan. NAME A CHARITY IN YOUR WILL The most basic way to give to a charity is by naming it in your will. Simply name the charitable organization you wish to support among your beneficiaries, and specify the assets you wish to give. If estate or income taxes are a concern, ensure your chosen organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. These are the charities the IRS deems tax-exempt. always a good idea to notify an organization about what you are planning to give. Smaller philanthropies may not accept complex assets, such as stocks or real estate. On the other hand, some charities may specialize in specific assets. For example, if your home is considered a historic site within your town, you may want to gift it to a preservation society so that it stays properly maintained. MATCH THE ASSETS TO THE CHARITY Almost all charities will accept cash bequests, though it is MAKING CHARITY A PART OF YOUR ESTATE PLAN LEAVING A LEGACY OF GIVING

DECIDE HOW TO GIVE There are different ways to structure a charitable bequest, giving you the flexibility to make sure your estate planning goals are met. If you have a set sum of money or a particular asset you wish to leave to a charity, you can make a specific bequest in your will. However, if you want to ensure your loved one’s needs are met before giving a portion of your estate to charity, you can make what’s known as a residuary gift. With a residuary gift, once debts have been paid off and your other beneficiaries have received their bequests, a specified percentage of your remaining estate will go to a charity of your choice. OTHER AVENUES Depending on your income level and the kinds of assets in your estate, more complex means of making a planned gift may be available to you.
