solution represented by the PANORAMA True Hybrid lineup stands in sharp contrast to aggregated, add- on component options that truly cannot achieve the seamless production needed in today’s converting environment,” said Paul Teachout, Nilpeter USA’s Vice President Sales & Marketing. The companies have worked with one another for several years now, but this was the first opportunity the two manufacturers had to share an open house event. The companies have formed a true partnership, one in which Nilpeter’s and Screen’s sales people trav- el and work cooperatively side by side. Long Histories Both companies had the opportunity to share their distinguished histories with open house attendees. Ken Ingram, President of Screen Americas, dis- cussed his company’s experience of servicing the graphic arts industries for more than 150 years, with more than 1,500 Screen-manufactured contin- uous-feed inkjet engines in service worldwide to- day. The company believes in, “technology crossing boundaries,” Ingram said. All the company’s various divisions leverage advances in shared R&D, engi- neering and material science, which is then adapted to the specific market purpose. Nilpeter is celebrating its 100th anniversary in busi- ness this year, and the company remains 100% private- ly owned. “With innovative technology, creative solutions, and excellent customer support, we strive to be the most attractive business partner and supplier of printing presses in the global narrow-web market for self-adhe- sive labels and flexible packaging,” said Lenny DeGirol- mo, President/Managing Director of Nilpeter USA. “Our machines produce the full spectrum of labels and packaging from all types of materials,” DeGirolmo said.“We are committed to solving complex challenges for our customers.” Diane Ewanko, Business Development Manager at Avery Dennison, provided an overview of the compa- ny, which specializes in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of labeling and functional materials. The company currently has operations in more than 50 countries worldwide. Ewanko shared survey results from FINAT in which 45 percent of converters sur- veyed said they plan to buy a digital press in the next 18 months. The same survey also showed that by 2023, digital will make enormous market gains but that flexo will still hold a commanding market share. MacDermid Hosts Multi-City Roadshows
Due to increasing R&D, fresh developments in pack- aging products, development in the generic industry and an increasing contracting trend, this industry is an- ticipated to be experiencing remarkable development in the next years. The market is also anticipated to drive the growth in demand for reusable and environmentally friendly packaging. The highest market share of North America in 2018 was over 35 percent. The increased production of child-resistant packaging products is one of the vari- ables contributing to this. Moreover, the growing pro- duction of branded medicines requiring increased packaging material input to safeguard the drug against the external environment reinforces demand for the regional product. Asia Pacific will increase by 12.2 percent during the forecast period at the highest CAGR. McDonald’s Canada To Test Sustainable Packaging McDonald’s Canada is putting sustainable packag- ing options and recycling initiatives to the test at two “Green Concept Restaurants.” These quick service restaurants will serve as incubators for new cups, lids, cutlery, stir sticks, and straws made from renewable, recycled, or certified sources.

Food Labels Could Slash Healthcare Costs By $31B Researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Massachu- setts, estimated the cost-effectiveness of the Food and Drug Administration’s required “added sugar” label- ing over a 20-year period to see how it could nudge consumers to reduce their intake of sugary foods and drinks, lead to health improvements and decrease health-care spending. Labeling food and drinks with “added sugar” could lower heart disease and diabetes risks, and cut health- care costs by more than $31 billion, the new study sug- gests. The estimated annual healthcare costs of obesi- ty-related illness in the United States is more than $190 billion, or nearly 21 percent of medical spending. “The purpose of our study was to estimate the impact of the FDA’s “added sugars” label on reducing sugar in- take and preventing diabetes and cardiovascular dis- ease,” said Renata Micha, associate research professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston.“Our results indicate that timely implementation of the ‘added sugars’ label could reduce consumption of foods and beverages with add- ed sugars, which could then lead to an improvement in health and a reduction in health-care spending.” The FDA requirement was announced in 2016. The first major revision to the Nutrition Facts label since 1993, it was aimed at helping consumers make more
informed decisions about what they eat, drink and feed their families. Most food manufacturers were re- quired to use the new label by July 2018.However, the FDA recently announced a delay in the mandatory im- plementation of the updated Nutrition Facts label until 2020 for large manufacturers, and to 2021 for smaller ones. Some manufacturers have already started label- ing their products with the “added sugar” content. The packaging market is expected to grow to $278.59 billion, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 6 percent from 2019 to 2023, according to a new report fromTechnavio. “The rising awareness among brand owners and mar- keting experts regarding the importance of packaging to attract consumer attention is leading to the intro- duction of innovative packaging,” said a senior analyst atTechnavio.“There is a rise in demand for multi-packs and single-serve, and miniaturized packaging for vari- ous products, especially in the food packaging indus- try. Eco-friendly packaging is also being adopted as it is safe for consumers and the environment. Thus, the advancements in packaging technologies and a rise in the demand for products sold in innovative/flexible packaging are factors that will boost market growth.” Packaging Market To Grow To $278B

The webinar brought participants into the inner workings of Amazon’s ecosystem and what it demands of packaging. The webinar explained the different roles of packaging online vs. in stores, the three-fold impact of product damage, and the types of sellers on Amazon. Tuesday, May 21, the second webinar, The New Rule- book , discussed setting the bar for e-com packaging and Amazon’s Frustration-Free Packaging Programs. Lindberg described how to create better packaging and eliminate “wrap rage,” the frustration an end-user feels when opening packaging. He also introduced the Amazon packaging pyramid that lays out the different levels of packaging required. The final webinar, Above, Beyond, & Inside Out , on Tuesday, May 28, used real-life examples to highlight successful e-commerce packaging. Lindberg discussed opportunities for greater sustainability, branding in e-commerce and designing for an unboxing experi- ence. He explained how packaging manufacturers can help brands use subtlety, efficiency, value, thoughtful- ness, sustainability, and personalization to make the most of their e-commerce packaging. Cascades Joins Amazon Packaging Support Network Cascades, Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada,is an official m ember of the Amazon Packaging Support and Sup- plier (APASS) network. APASS is a program designed by Amazon to support vendors, sellers, and manufac- turers in certifying their products as Prep-Free Pack- aging (PFP), Ships-in-Own Container (SIOC) and Frus- tration-Free Packaging (FFP). By doing so, they’ll be the right size, protected against damage, ready-to-ship without the need for additional packaging, and ideally easy to open and recyclable.Amazon provides a list of suppliers that can help test, design, and supply packag- ing in line withAmazon’s packaging certification rules. Cascades views this participation with Amazon as a way of offering creative and sustainable packaging solutions that comply with the e-commerce industry’s most rigorous requirements and specifications, thus creating value in its customers’ supply chain. “As a member of the APASS network, Cascades will be able to help its customers in three ways: by making sure that their products are well protected, by offering our customers sustainable solutions that also provide the best customer experience possible, and by en-
abling our vendor and manufacturer partners to align themselves with Amazon’s requirements,” said Charles Malo, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cas- cades Containerboard Packaging. Cascades’ R&D Centre, reportedlt the largest private Canadian research center in the industry, has imple- mented an internal quality system based on ISTA,TAPPI and ASTM directives to ensure that the company pro- vides consistent service quality. Cascades is therefore able to conduct baseline testing on boxes and compo- nents (liner and medium), as well as competitive anal- ysis, root cause analysis and qualification testing of in- dividual packages or pallets. The R&D Center provides ISTA 6-Amazon.com testing to help customers meet Amazon’s strict packaging requirements. “E-commerce represented 14.3 percent of total re- tail sales in 2018 in the United States, and Amazon is an important part of this. Our goal at Cascades is to partner with our customers as they grow their e-com- merce business, and by joining the APASS network, we can offer our clients the essential services they need to successfully certify their packaging withAmazon,” said Danick Lavoie,Vice-President,Operations,Packaging at Cascades Containerboard Packaging.
