HAMILTON | Hard work has paid off for a Hawkesbury native who recently won two honours at the Ontario Figure Championships in Hamilton. Chantal Mayer, who was born and raised in Hawkesbury but now lives in Ot- tawa, placed first in the Figure 1 Class as well as first in the Over-35 Class. Figure is a sport similar to bodybuild- ing but the competitors, all of which are female, are judged solely on muscu- lar symmetry and definition. Muscle size is downplayed. “Figure 1” is for females 5’1” and under. Mayer is now the Ontario Champion for
Chantal Mayer with the hardware she won at the Ontario Figure Champion- ships. both of these categories and she has now qualified for the Canadian Championships, which she plans to attend next summer. In addition to the many years of weight training, cardio and nutrition that Chantal has undergone, preparation for this con- test, required months of dieting, relates her husband, Chris Becanic. She also increased cardio and weight training to remove ex- cess body fat from her body but still retain most of her hard-earned muscle. Figure competitions appeal mostly to women, who want to compete in a body competition, but wish to avoid bodybuild- ing’s demands for heavy muscle mass. The competitors enter the stage in high heels and a two-piece bathing suit, line up in front of judging panel and are command- ed to execute a series of quarter-turns. In this round, they are judged more critically against the other competitors for condi- tioning, leanness, symmetry and how“femi- nine” and “athletic” (as opposed to brawny) their muscularity is. Presentation and other aesthetic qualities such as skin tone, hair, and make-up are also factored into the final score.
