50 Years of Kappa League

KAPPA LEAGUE CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

Lawrenceville-Duluth (GA) Alumni Chapter Kappa League: A Story of Guide Right Excellence

T he Lawrenceville-Duluth Alumni Chapter (LDAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi was char- tered on March 8, 2008. In September of 2008, the chapter started mentoring African American young men through our Guide Right program. In September of 2009, LDAC started its Kappa League program under the leadership of Benjamin Holmes as the first Guide Right Director. His leader- ship garnered recognition for excellence at regional and national levels. Daud Haseeb was the second Guide Right Director from 2013 – 2016, our third Guide Right Director was Anthony Peak 2017 – 2019, and our current 2020 program is co-lead by Michael Boykins and Luther Payton. Our monthly meetings are geared to provide a structured business setting for the young men. We rely on Brothers within our chapter to share their knowl- edge and experience. This includes exposing the young men to the seven phases of the Kappa League Program. We can count on the Brothers from the chapter to provide context to our young men on a wide range of topics. These interactions provided by the LDAC Brothers has given the Kappa Leaguers the example they need, but often do not have. This direct interaction has served as reinforcement to those who do have positive male role models at home, but also to those who lack that male pres- ence.

We engage our Kappa League Of- ficers and have them take ownership of their meetings by taking minutes, complete reports, and present informa- tion during the meetings. They are also involved in the planning stage and we have a conference call the Thursday before business meetings to ensure ev- eryone knows their part and solicit ideas on what needs to be done to ensure the other Kappa Leaguers will enjoy the meeting. The LDAC brothers also engage the Kappa Leaguers in discussions about their careers and expose the Kappa Leaguers to different professions. We’ve received feedback from some parents that some of the Kappa Leaguers have selected majors based on these meet- ings or discussions. Additionally, Kappa Leaguers who don’t hold office have opportunity to present to the group and increase their public speaking acumen. This year, we were intentional about dedicating December and January busi- ness meetings to discuss Martin Luther King Jr. to enable our young men to gain a better understanding and appreciation for his sacrifice. This contributed to a record number of Kappa Leaguers par- ticipating in the MLK parade on January 20, 2020. This past year, we had multiple days where there have been simultane- ous events going on, allowing multiple groups to participate. Our community service, cultural awareness, and social

events, provide positive environments in group settings to foster a positive environment and sense of pride. Our outings to sporting and other events, continue to allow the young men to get exposure to people and places they might not otherwise have. This enables them to develop more holistically and broaden their horizons. We are proud of the impact of our program which includes a 100% gradu- ation rate for high school seniors since the inception of our program. LDAC has won numerous Southeastern Province Guide Right awards and at least one Grand Chapter Guide Right award at every Conclave since 2013. Spotlight on Former Kappa Leaguer Brother Cameron L.
