50 Years of Kappa League

KAPPA LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

Reactions About the Program:

but I am also able to learn about new perspectives in life. I went to the Na- tional Guide Right Student Leadership Forum in Pennsylvania and I was able to interact with other Kappa Leaguers from across the nation and it really opened my eyes up to all the different perspec- tives and all the different types of people out there in the world. I am able to learn from these experiences and able to grow myself as a person and as a leader in today's world.” Justin Stevenson. 2020 graduating Kappa Leaguer “I served as vice president of com- munity service of the Richardson-Plano Kappa League. I wanted to thank Mr. Burnett as well as all the other mentors that we have had throughout my time. I have been in Kappa League for five years. I wanted to thank all the Broth- ers during the that time because you all have helped me. You have pushed me to be my best self. I want to tell the younger Kappa Leaguers do not take for granted the current events activity. It has been very beneficial and made me the speaker than I am today. Kappa League pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. I can speak in front of any group of people. I used to be the one that Mr. Burnett would say “speak up speak up I can't hear you.” Now I am the best one of the best presenters around.”

Ms. Cerrita Burrell, Kappa League parent “Kappa League definitely had a posi- tive impact on Malachi. Malachi is my only child and we do not have any family in Dallas. It was very important for him to get connected with an organization that was going to uplift him. I noticed after the meetings when we would have our discussions, I could tell that he re- ally was learning a lot. He enjoyed the time with the mentors and the other young men and that he really appreciat- ed the wisdom and knowledge that was being imparted to him. It provided a positive imagery of black men something that is vitally important considering the day and times that we live in. I really want to thank the men of the Richard- son-Plano (TX) Alumni Chapter for dedicating your time and resources to my son and to all the young men. I know that the experiences and the lessons through Kappa League are ones that they will continue to carry with them in the next chapter of their life.” Dimitri Johnson, 2020 graduating Kappa Leaguer “The Kappa League program has been a part of my life since freshman year of high school. It has taught me the qualities of leadership and how to apply those qualities in my day-to-day life. I plan to use those same skills in college to help me be successful.”

Brother Thomas McCaleb “Participating with the Richardson- Plano Guide Right program allows me to fulfill my duty to provide young black men access to a positive, successful, engaged role model that looks like them. I enjoy listening to their dreams and working with them to develop the plans which will allow them to come true. I look forward to spending time with the Richardson-Plano Kappa Leaguers. The creativity that the young men show- case always amazes me. Whether that is developing civic-minded rap videos expressing their political views, working at the local food pantry to give back in their communities, or even just listening to their growth over time as they come back to help the younger members, I am reminded that service can take many forms. They always listen closely when I share my ideas on what will make their dreams come true, and I am very cogni- zant as they share their ideas that may someday end up changing the world. I am honored to serve in the program.” Ethan Cousin, 2020 graduating Kappa Leaguer “I believe this has impacted me in a very positive way. It has sharpened my leadership skills and allows me to express myself through public speaking. I am not only able to make new friends,
