KAPPA LEAGUE CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
going on trips, meeting new people, getting all the new connections, and seeing people my age progressing at a quick rate. I also like the team building activities that we do in the meetings, but outside of meetings, one of my favorite things is to go to Skateland.” “The Skateland event is a fundraiser event, where we receive a portion of the admission fees. We take the money and use it to buy items for the Penny Lane Holiday Boutique. We will come in and be able to skate for free. It has been a fun fundraiser. We have had the Delta Gems, Sigma Gamma Rho Rhoers and Zeta Achonettes attend. The Kappa Leaguers enjoy it when the young ladies join them. We have recognized that has been a way to keep their attention. We try to find creative ways to increase those activities” explained Brother Lee,
who has been Director of the SFSC Kappa League since 2016. Kappa Leaguers have also par- ticipated in a behind the scenes tour of the Los Angeles International Airport, participated in the Granada Hills An- nual Holiday Day Parade, and numer- ous socially uplifting activities. Three former Kappa Leaguers have achieved membership into our Grand Fraternity which illustrates our philosophy that Kappa League is a primary pipeline for the longevity of Kappa Alpha Psi. As a side benefit, the SFSC Kappa League has been instrumental in re- claiming Brothers because their sons get involved or they just want to be mentors. Once they get active, even when their son’s graduate they tend to stay involved. In conclusion, Brother Lee said “It's been great. Like any program you have
ups and downs and challenges. I think the beauty of it is that we work through this together with the young men. It has just been great for them to open up and share with us and we try to make this a safe place for them, where they can really be themselves and open up. Sometimes they may share stuff that we may not necessarily want to hear, but the fact that they do makes us feel good that they are that comfortable with us. The leadership to you (Brother Kev- in Burnett) and the rest of the National Guide Right Committee has provided has been instrumental. It saves us time and effort. You have programs we can follow. We try to make this program for the young man and give them the tools and resources for them to have success in life.”
“Because of Kappa League I have learned so many life skills… I have learned about my culture, my history, and my skin. Those are lessons they don’t teach you in school” Loriyan Bates, graduating senior “They taught us to have pride in ourselves as Black men and to break stereotypes…” Reese Johnson, graduating senior It is a very fun program. I learn a lot of things. I have en- joyed the time that I spent with the people I have met and all the relationships. Diego McGowan, Kappa Leaguer
“The more I did it, I felt more comfortable and I was more outspoken and that just made me a better person overall… Kappa League really opened my eyes and made me become a more confident man”
Taye-Jon Johnson Cook, graduating senior
“I was shy and distant and closed myself to others… The more I have been in it, the more confident and outgoing I have become… I want to thank Kappa League for making a better man”
Maseeh Muhammad, graduating senior
