THE CASE OF THE LEAKY ROOF
How I Found My ‘Wow’
I was wowed, which doesn’t happen very often these days. Maybe our expectations are higher, or maybe people don’t believe in the value of good customer service anymore. I’ll tell you what, though. The roof specialist provided excellent customer service and delivered for us, and when he asked me to write a review for his business, I said "absolutely." I even had folks call me to ask about using him for their roof, and I told them, “Yes, you’ll be very happy.” We still trust referrals from families and friends because we know those people are going to be honest with us.
When I had my roof done, I hired a contractor who built many homes, though he wasn’t a specialist in roofing. He went through the steps and completed the project, I paid him, and he went on his way.
Come to find out later, the roof leaked.
I was frustrated. I hired someone for a specific service, trusting that they would be able to deliver, and I was let down. The contractor came back a few times, but he was never able to resolve the leaky roof. Mold began growing inside the house to the extent that we had to replace sheet rock. You’d think a contractor would know how to build a roof, but he just wasn’t specialized enough. So, I hired a roof specialist — someone who only does roofing. The first day that he came to my house, he went up on the roof, took pictures, came back down, and went over each area in the pictures with my wife, pointing out where the problems were. He even came back a second time to review his findings with me. Even though I wasn’t there the first time, he was patient enough to return and show me what he found. There were more problems than we’d thought. It wasn’t just a couple shingles that were causing the leak. There were structural issues. Confident in his process, my wife and I gave him the go ahead to fix our roof. I was wowed, which doesn’t happen very often these days. Maybe our expectations are higher, or maybe people don’t believe in the value of good customer service anymore. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. It was so simple, but he went above and beyond for us. He didn’t just replace the roof; he took the time to walk us through his process and make sure we understood the problem and how he was solving it. I never had someone in construction take pictures and go through them with me. I thought it was just a matter of replacing a couple shingles. When he showed me where the leaks were coming from and took the time to help me understand what was going on with our roof, it really was an amazing experience. He replaced the roof, and it stopped leaking.
The key to my wow experience? Roofing was that gentleman’s specialty.
It’s a bit like orthodontics. Sure, there are others who can provide Invisalign. But when you seek a service from someone who doesn’t specialize in it, you’ll sometimes encounter problems, just as I did with my roof.
Often, patients come in expecting that one crooked tooth is the source of their problems when, really, their whole bite is off. Like the roof specialist, I take pictures, and we review how orthodontics can help their bite. We don’t just deliver straight teeth —we deliver smiles.

ROAD TRIPS DON’T HAVE TO BE PAINFUL TRY GAMES, AUDIOBOOKS, AND PODCASTS TO PASS THE TIME
INCLUDE THE WHOLE FAMILY
Once the travel games no longer pique anyone’s interest, try an activity that can be fun for the whole family: a traditional road trip game. If you have a car full of storytellers, try “Fortunately, Unfortunately.” The rules are simple. The first person starts by saying, “fortunately,” and mentioning something good about the road trip or the destination. The next person (moving clockwise) then follows by saying something “unfortunate” about the previous person’s statement. Take turns with every passenger in the car. If someone stumbles, they get a strike; three strikes and you’re out. The last passenger standing wins. We get it. Sometimes passengers don’t want to play games. Occasionally, they’d rather relax or take a nap. However, your listening material doesn’t have to be limited to Dad’s favorite music. Instead, consider listening to a family-friendly audiobook or podcast, which can make the longest and most boring parts of your trip an entertaining or educational experience. Almost any popular book is available in audio form, but it can be hard to find an enjoyable podcast. “Transistor” is a science-focused podcast that explores subjects kids and adults will find fascinating. Or if you’re looking for something fictional, try “Storynory,” in which the narrator tells fairy tales and legends from all over the globe. PLAY AN AUDIOBOOK OR PODCAST
Summer is right around the corner, which means you’ll soon pile the whole family into the car, ready to brave the road for a vacation. Everyone knows that riding in the car for hours can be torture. But with a little creativity, you can turn the worst part of a long trip into a fun event.
PACK A TRAVEL GAME
When the excitement of the family vacation starts to wear off, keep the peace and entertain your kids with a travel game. Many board game manufacturers offer travel-sized versions that are easy to pack and play in the car. Before your next road trip, consider purchasing digital Yahtzee, which packs all the fun of the classic game without the dice, or IQ Fit, a logic game with over 100 challenges. Both games cost around $10 and can provide hours of entertainment.
A SMILE AND A LIFE TRANSFORMED
When people make unkind comments about someone’s appearance, it can do lasting damage. For folks who get made fun of for their smile, it can be especially hurtful. Our smiles are meant to bring joy to ourselves and to others. When we’re not comfortable smiling, it takes a toll on our confidence. We see this often with patients who have lived their whole lives with smiles they feel they can’t show off. In our line of work, we’re also lucky enough to see the transformation that a confident smile can bring about. That was the experience Tasha* had after coming to Team Demas Orthodontics. Tasha had lived for most of her life with a smile she wasn’t happy with. Years ago, at her wedding, the photographer told her not to smile because of her teeth. Can you imagine the impact hearing those words would have? It was such a painful blow to Tasha’s confidence on a day that was supposed to be filled with joy. With orthodontic treatment, we were able to give Tasha a smile she could feel confident showing off. And she’s doing just that. It started the day she got her braces off, as she was sitting at a stoplight in her car. “I could not get over the change,” she said. “I could not stop smiling.”
What a difference that must make to Tasha’s entire outlook. It’s our favorite part about what we do — giving patients the confidence to smile.
If you or a loved one have been hiding your smile because of how you feel about your teeth, call Team Demas today and find out why people are smiling.

THE CONTAGIOUS POWER OF A SMILE
PLUS: HOW OUR SHARE A SMILE PROGRAM WORKS
You’re walking your dog down the block and a passerby smiles at you. “Wow, they look so friendly,” you think to yourself. You can’t help but smile back, right? That’s because you feel the contagious happiness that a smile radiates. Isn’t the power of a smile amazing? A smile conveys happiness, friendship, and positivity. You even benefit from giving a smile — it triggers a chemical reaction in your brain that creates endorphins, so the happy feelings keep coming. When you have a smile that you’re proud of, you have even more reason to show it off. That’s what many people find after having orthodontic treatment. “I could not stop smiling,” one

ENRICH YOUR VACATION The virtues of buying locally sourced food and supporting small businesses have been widely extolled. But we rarely think to apply the same practices when we travel. Many Americans spring for all-inclusive packages when planning their next summer vacation, but doing so means they’ll miss out on some of the best aspects of the culture they’re visiting.
BUY LOCAL WHEN YOU’RE ABROAD
FOOD Why have a cheeseburger from a fast-food chain when you can try a local favorite? A great way to start is by asking your taxi driver or hotel concierge about their favorite place to eat. You’ll discover new foods and flavor combinations, and the locally owned restaurant is sure to appreciate your business! ART Just as your town probably has local artisans who produce unique and interesting work, the same is true for your vacation destination. Anyone can get a gift shop bauble that was mass-produced somewhere else. Take the time to peruse market stalls and craft fairs while you travel. It can lead you to some truly special souvenirs, and you’ll support the arts and traditions of the region! PEOPLE While you’re out sampling local restaurants and exploring local markets, you’ll meet plenty of local people. Don’t be afraid to strike up a friendly conversation. You can make new friends around the globe and learn about their unique experiences. One of the most enriching experiences in life is meeting new people and gaining new perspectives. MEMORIES Treasured memories are the best souvenir you can bring home from any vacation. So you owe it to yourself to get out and explore!
Part of the joy of traveling is having new experiences you can’t have at home. Whether you’re in another state or another country, you owe it to yourself to seek out the unique aspects of that location. But to find the character and quirks of your destination, you’ll have to explore beyond the hotel lobby.
