Albert Talks Spring/Summer 2023

ALUMNI

Alicia Simmons ’00, Bermuda

Alicia came to Albert College from Bermuda for her Grade 11 and OAC years, and she had such a positive experience that she chose to stay in Canada for her university studies. Alicia moved back to Bermuda after completing her undergrad degree in communication studies and political science at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. Alicia became the first person to hold the role of legislative editor for the attorney general in Bermuda, and she quickly found her footing within the team. As legislative editor, Alicia must proofread and edit all legislation that is drafted by parliamentary counsel. Her job can be very demanding, and in the first few years of the pandemic, things became even more hectic due to the volume and time-sensitivity of the pandemic-related legislation. She is committed to ensuring that the legislation produced for Bermuda is of high quality. In addition to her work for the Bermuda government, Alicia interned at the non- partisan organization, Common Cause in Washington DC, whose mission is to uphold the core values of American democracy. She also obtained a master’s degree in public relations from Webster University in 2010. Alicia has become an integral part of the Bermudian government, and her dedication was recognized in May 2022, when she was awarded a public service award with three colleagues. She credits some of her success today to her time at Albert College. “Albert instilled a routine that helped me in the real world. It prepared me to be a responsible adult,” she notes. Alicia found that her time at Albert College was positive and fulfilling. She mentions how she was able to develop new skills through activities like sports. After initially signing up for intramural sports, Alicia joined the volleyball, lacrosse and field hockey teams and was the recipient of the most improved volleyball player award. Alicia was only 16 when she came to Canada and she was grateful to the support of the Albert College community. “The community feel was my favourite part of Albert life. I am more of an introvert and felt that I would fit in at Albert. The supportive vibe made me feel at home there.” Alicia Simmons has contributed to life in Bermuda and is proud of her long-time connections to Albert College.
