SHEWFELT LECTURE

Great men and women throughout history have never been praised for their wealth or success, but rather by their heart and what they have done for others. ”

On February 23, Michel Chikwanine shared his late father’s words, during his presentation as the guest speaker for this year’s Shewfelt Memorial Lecture. This message has been pivotal to Chikwanine, who came to Canada as a refugee, became the first in his family to graduate from university, and is now a United Nations Fellow for People of African Descent. Michel is an accomplished motivational speaker and author of the graphic novel, Child Soldier: When Boys and Girls are Used in War . Michel grew up amid the terror of the Great War of Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much of his childhood was ravaged by the death and decay of a war that claimed the lives of 5.8 million people - his father included - and forced him to be a child soldier. Michel shared his heartfelt, emotional and inspiring story with students from Grade 6 to 12 during the day, and with alumni, parents, staff and friends from the community in the evening. His words touched the hearts of everyone in the room. This annual lecture series, named after Albert College’s 11th Headmaster, Lorne L. Shewfelt, is dedicated to his love of learning. Each year, a different exceptional speaker shares a message that may be personal, challenging or uplifting, but is always meaningful to our students and audiences.
