ALUMNI

In Memoriam

Albert College is saddened to learn of the loss of these alumni and we extend our condolences to their loved ones.

Christina (Madden) Vernon ’86 passed away on August 7 in Ottawa, Ontario after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Known as “Princess Warrior” by her husband, daughter, friends and colleagues for her courageous battle, Christina was born in Ottawa and grew up all over the world. She made many friends along the way including the one year she attended Albert College for her graduating year. She worked as a behavioural therapist at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre for over 20 years. She loved doing Zumba and drums classes, taking her dogs to the dog park, cross-stitching, and dinners with family and friends. Marion (Mahood) Byers ’42 passed away on December 2, 2015 at the age of 91 after a long and happy life. Marion was married to her husband, Gordon, for 54 years. She was a mother to four children and was loved by her many grandchildren. Marion visited Albert College in 2011 with her daughter and son-in-law and enjoyed seeing the Memorial Chapel, Ackerman Hall and the new Manor. She was a boarding student from Bowmanville, Ontario and at that time she lived in the original Victoria Manor. She fondly remembers her time in boarding and studying at Albert. Marion was very active in her church, serving on many committees and singing in the church choir.

Marylea (Fox) Burtt ’54 passed away on July 23, 2021, at Belleville General Hospital after a short illness in her 87th year. Marylea graduated from McGill University with a bachelor of science in home economics in 1959, and married her husband, Ross, in 1960. She worked alongside him in his chiropractic office until retirement. Marylea was active and engaged in her community. She was the first woman in Canada to chair a public transit commission, serving in Belleville in that capacity for nine years, starting in 1968. She was an elected trustee for Hastings County School Board, an elder, and president of United Church Women and of a local political party. She had a long-standing love and dedication to the Canadian Federation of University Women and held many positions at the local, provincial and national levels contributing to many projects over 60-plus years. Alex Olhovich-Greene ’53 passed away in Mexico City and his life was celebrated this past year on November 6 and 7. Alex was originally from La Concepcion, Zulia, Venezuela. While in his senior year at Albert College, Alex received the Bessie Handley Prize in music. The Olhovich family has had a long-standing relationship with Albert College as Alex’s five sons all attended the school for one year.

William “Bill” Angus Johnson ’56 passed away on November 24, in his 86th year. Born in Chatham, Bill ran the family insurance business, W.F. Johnson Limited, retiring to spend time travelling and pursuing his many interests, including boating, woodworking, gardening and model trains.

Patrick Doran ’58 passed away on March 17 at the age of 84 in Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario. Pat was a teacher and was known simply as Mr. Doran to generations of students at Kapuskasing District High School, where he taught for 30 years. He had life-long connections with the students he mentored. Pat loved Kapuskasing and he loved the North. He attended Albert College for two years and graduated with the class of 1958. Pat enjoyed carpentry and refurbishing old cars in his large workshop. One of Pat’s greatest loves was the cottage he never stopped building at Remi Lake.
