ALUMNI

Legacy Giving

John Haining McGibbon ’54 was a boarding student and graduated from Albert College with the class of 1954, having started in 1951. He was Student Council President during his time at the school. He was also the recipient of the Howard Purchase Memorial Award for the finest contribution to boarding life in Graham Hall. John was an active member of the track and field team and received the Howard Trophy for senior boys swimming. John was not only involved in the life of the school during his time as a student, but he was also involved as an alumnus. In 2003, John agreed to represent the class of 1954 as a Class Agent. The work of class agents was a big part of the 150th Anniversary reunion’s success in 2007. After Albert College, John enjoyed backpacking through England, Scotland and several European countries for part of a year. He then attended the University of Waterloo where he earned his bachelor of arts and became a teacher. John particularly enjoyed history and loved teaching this subject. He was also a beloved teacher of the intermediate students at his church on Sundays. John was both a teacher and principal for 33 years and devoted his career to inspiring and guiding students in education.

In October, Mary McGibbon honoured her late husband with a gift of $50,000 and established the John Haining McGibbon ’54 Endowment Fund in his memory. Given John’s devotion to lifelong learning as an educator and his Albert College roots, Mary knew that the College was a perfect fit for his legacy. The purpose of this fund is to provide faculty with professional development so that they can further develop their skills to deliver the best possible education. This fund will also support student learning from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 through program enhancements to enrich or support student learning. We are honoured and incredibly grateful for the opportunity to create this endowment fund in John’s memory. John dedicated his life to promoting education and shaping the lives of young people and this endowment fund will ensure that John’s legacy continues through the education of generations of students at Albert College.
