STEPPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE The Benefits of Doing Something Terrifying Everyone faces fears at some point, and one of the most terrifying things is trying something new. Stepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown is daunting, but you can’t progress through life without doing this at least once. I like to stick with what I’m used to, as I’m sure many of us prefer. However, by taking that leap and doing something that I wasn’t used to, it allowed me to grow as a person, doctor, and business owner. When I first started NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture, it was a frightening process. One of the things they don’t teach you in chiropractic school is how to run a business. Their focus is to turn you into a great doctor, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Someone could be the best doctor in the world, but if you don’t know how to run and manage a business, you can’t help people. In my case, I loved to learn as much as I could about a subject, and that helped me achieve so much. “I like to stick with what I’m used to, as I’m sure many of us prefer. However, by taking that leap and doing something that I wasn’t used to, it allowed me to grow as a person, doctor, and business owner.” From the moment I had the idea in my head, I began to do a lot of research about starting and running a business of my own. I read so many business books and took a lot of classes on how to run a successful practice so that I could be a doctor and business owner. I learned how to build a website, how to market, and what significant marketing techniques I could use, all to help me achieve my goal of starting my practice. It was challenging. I spent long hours dedicated to learning the ins and outs of running a successful business. The biggest hurdle was managing a business and all the parts that come with it while continuing to be a

great doctor. There are many aspects to running a business that people don’t know about, which can be the making or breaking point. When I first started in my business, I didn’t know how difficult it was going to be. I first started thinking I could do this, but once I actually put it into practice and realized how much work there was to go into it, it was a bit of a wakeup call. The fear I had when first getting into business has all but vanished. I know how to run my business and do it well. I can focus on perfecting it. It’s not as simple as starting something and then letting it take its course; you have to maintain it. I’m constantly keeping an eye out for the changing marketing strategies and which aspects I need to improve. The fear, pain, and effort I’ve put into my business has been well worth it. I’m a doctor and business owner who is continuing to grow and improve with each passing day. I couldn’t be where I am today without taking that first step out of my comfort zone, even though it was nerve-racking. Jumping into the unknown can be a terrifying first leap. You don’t know whether or not you’ll succeed. I encourage you to gather your courage and experience new activities or challenges that come your way. It might be scary when you first start out, but it’ll be far more rewarding when you do.

COOKING OILS DECLASSIFIED Are You Using Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Wrong?

Not all cooking oils are created equal. Some cooking oils have distinct flavors, while others are suited for high temperatures. Every oil is unique. Here are six common oils and their best uses. EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL An often misused oil, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) should not be used for cooking or frying. It’s simply too delicate and cannot withstand high temperatures, which can damage the flavor, ruining dishes. Instead, use it as a finishing oil —drizzle it over pasta, salad, or bread. OLIVE OIL Unlike EVOO, standard olive oil can be used for cooking and frying. It can withstand temps up to about 460 degrees. In many cases, you can use it in place of other cooking oils — just be sure you’re using plain olive oil and not EVOO. COCONUT OIL Better for baking than cooking, coconut oil is generally solid at room temperature. It can be used for some cooking, but like EVOO it doesn’t play well with high temperatures. Keep it at 350 degrees or below and use it as a butter substitute. CANOLA OIL/VEGETABLE OIL A good option for high-heat cooking, baking, and frying, these utilitarian oils are completely neutral in flavor, but they’re not heart- healthy. Vegetable oil is a generic mix of oils, including soybean, canola (rapeseed), and palm oils, making it the most inexpensive cooking oil. PEANUT OIL Great for high-heat cooking, frying, and deep-frying, peanut oil has a neutral flavor, so you can easily use it in just about any dish that needs a cooking oil. It’s also a more heart-healthy option than canola and vegetable oils. AVOCADO OIL When you need an oil to withstand high temps, this is your oil. It has a smoke point of 510 degrees, making it perfect for grilling and stir- frying. What makes avocado oil particularly unique is it can also be used as a finishing oil, like EVOO. It’s light yet resilient.

KNOW WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Common Injuries, Treatments, and Preventions

This time of year, you can expect your kids are getting excited for their favorite sports starting up. While many parents are just as excited for their kids, they’re also worried. Participating in sports can lead to injuries. To ensure that your kids have the best year possible, here are a few things to keep in mind. COMMON INJURIES Some of the more common injuries we see at NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture are muscle strains and ligament sprains. Another common type of injury athletes face is repetitive stress injuries (RSIs), when a part of your body becomes overworked from unvarying movements, resulting in inflammation or tissue damage. Many kids tend to play one sport year- round, and they don’t get as much of a break as they should, leading to repetitive motion injuries. TREATMENTS What makes our office so unique is that we can treat these injuries. Most chiropractors focus on treating the joints of the body and the spine, but we have many muscle treatment techniques. We use methods such as Active Release Techniques, Dry Needling, Graston Technique, and laser therapy, which helps speed up the healing process. We know that athletes are keen to get back onto the field, and the sooner they’re at full health, the sooner they can return. INJURY PREVENTION Our clinic works on healing the injury and strengthening the area around it. By doing this, it will help prevent the injury from occurring in the same spot. You can also prevent injuries before the season or game even starts by stretching or purchasing the right equipment. Having a loose-fitting helmet or too-small shin guards can lead to injuries. Make sure that equipment fits snugly and securely. The best way to get treatment is to seek out help as soon as the injury occurs. If you’re injured and don’t get it looked at for days, weeks, or even longer, it will take that much longer to heal. The sooner you can get your injury treated, the sooner you can get back on the field.

Even the Most Frightening Ghouls Need to Be Careful HAVE A FUN AND SAFE HALLOWEEN!

Before heading out for some good old-fashioned trick-or-treating, take the time to go over basic safety tips. Teach kids to look both ways before crossing, use crosswalks and traffic signals, cross streets on the corners, and never run across the street. Making eye contact with drivers before walking in front of their cars is also a good way to make sure the driver knows the child is there. CHOOSE SMART COSTUMES Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without costumes! They should be fun, but you can also make them safer by following a few simple guidelines. Add reflective tape to candy bags and costumes and wear light colors to stand out in the dark. Buying or making the right-sized costumes is also important. If they’re too large, they create a tripping hazard, and if they’re too tight, they can restrict movement. If your child wears a mask, make sure they can see out of it properly. MAKE A PLAN Before heading out to trick or treat, create a plan and discuss it with every member of your family. This ensures that if someone in your group wanders off, they’ll know where to look for you or where to go. In case you’re separated, label your child’s costume with your name, address, and phone number. If your children are old enough to trick or treat without adults, make sure that their cellphones are charged and on them at all times, and schedule regular check-ins.

Happy Halloween, you goblins, ghouls, witches, and spooks! It’s that time of year again when kids and adults alike can dress up and roam the streets as their favorite heroes, frights, or princesses. While kids are eager to show off their outfits and fill their pillowcases with sugary treasures, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential dangers on Halloween night. PRACTICE STREET SAFETY Make sure your kids understand basic road safety. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, “Children are more likely to be struck by a vehicle and killed during Halloween than any other day of the year.”
