Speke Highly of These Fine Halls & Tudor Triumphs This tour features some of the finest houses and gardens in Cheshire and Merseyside. We have a whole day at Tatton Park as well as visits to Speke Hall and Little Moreton Hall. We also include trips to Southport and the fascinating Lion Salt Works salt making site. PACKAGED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Tatton Hall, Park & Farm Today we have a full day at Tatton Park with entrance to the mansion, beautifully set amidst landscaped parkland, the gardens and the farm. The mansion houses one of the National Trust’s finest libraries plus richly furnished rooms and during our special Hidden Treasures guided tour we gain access to artifacts which are usually hidden from public view, learning about the secrets behind them. Afterwards we are free to explore the mansion at leisure, perhaps get a fascinating glimpse of life ‘below stairs’ in the servants’ quarters and wine cellar. After a break for lunch we can then enjoy a stroll in the lavish gardens with its manicured lawns, arboretum and Japanese garden before setting our sights on Tatton Dale, the corner of the estate where we find the farm. Here we can see how food has been produced since the 18th century, perhaps meet characters who lived and worked here in the 1940s and of course, see some of the rare breeds. Day 3 Southport & Speke Hall This morning we spend free time in the classic Victorian seaside resort of Southport. Enjoy the fabulous sandy beaches and take a leisurely stroll down the UK’s oldest iron pier to the Pavilion for breathtaking views. This afternoon we head to Merseyside for a visit to Speke Hall , one of the finest surviving examples of what is called a ‘wattle and daub’ wooden Tudor building. The garden and estate are known locally as a green oasis and depending on season, we can see a multitude of colour, manicured lawns and topiary throughout, with equally impressive views of the house. The house itself is steeped in 500 years of history and mystery; view the huge collection of ancient carved oak furniture and original William Morris wallpaper and keep a look out for the ‘priest hole’ in the Green bedroom. Last entry is 16.30, so we have plenty of time to make the most of our afternoon. Day 4 Little Moreton Hall & Lion Salt Works Today we have another gem as we visit Little Moreton Hall , a wonderful half- timbered manor house. A simply stunning example of a Tudor manor house, its quirky, wonky aspects certainly impress as the craftsmen intended over 500 years ago, as this iconic building stands proudly within its moated setting. We can learn about the family behind the hall and take time to explore at our own pace. After time for lunch, our next visit is to the Lion Salt Works , sited next to the Trent & Mersey Canal, this was the country’s last open-pan salt making site. Now lovingly restored, it makes for a fascinating visit during which, we discover how the works operated and the impact salt production had in this part of Cheshire. Note: Sensible footwear is recommended for Lion Salt Works. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
