5 YEARS OF THE CHAMPION FIRM WHERE WE’VE BEEN, WHERE WE’RE GOING
When I first opened The Champion Firm on June 1, 2014, it was just me. Things were a lot slower back then. I had 10 cases total, and I was running the whole firm by myself. In the past five years, the firm has changed a lot. Today I’m working alongside eight others: two other attorneys, Morgyn Graber and Shaun Cade; three paralegals, Janis Stevenson, Nicole Ronco, and Karen Slater; a legal assistant, Emily Siegelman; our office manager, Tamsie Pugh; and our bookkeeper.

ahead at the next five years, I don’t see us becoming some huge firm. That’s just not us, and that was never our plan.
The firm has grown a lot, and I’m proud to say we’ve built our practice primarily through referrals and word of mouth. We don’t advertise on billboards that line the road or on TV. Instead, our good work speaks for itself. New clients find us thanks to referrals from past clients or other attorneys who trust us and our reputation. Doing right by clients has always been second nature to me. Though, I have to admit that running a firm took a little more practice. Running a business isn’t something they teach you how to do in law school. I graduated knowing how to be a good lawyer, but when it came to managing a practice and people, I had to learn on-the-go. I’m not ashamed to say I made some mistakes along the way. There are things about running a business you have to learn the hard way, like how to hire the right person. I made mistakes, but I was able to learn from them, and that’s what mattered in the long run. If you’re afraid to make mistakes, you’ll be paralyzed by indecision and never learn anything. After five years of highs and lows, we’re finally in what I’d call a sweet spot. We have a great team here, and we know what we need to do to take care of our clients. Looking
I’ve never been interested in running a massive firm that takes on tons of cases and only knows their clients by number. Instead, I want to do good work for the clients we have and maintain a team that shares my philosophy. Our goal is to be able to handle bigger, more-sophisticated cases and look out for our clients, no matter what problems they’re struggling with. As The Champion Firm celebrates its fifth anniversary this month, I’ve been looking back at all we’ve accomplished. I want to thank all the clients who have trusted us over the last five years. Whether it was through a single case or you referred many cases to us, we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. Referring a friend or family member to the firm is the highest compliment you can pay us, and over the last five years, we’ve been humbled by the amount of compliments we’ve received.

Turn Family Game Night Into a Real Adventure ROLL THE DICE ON FUN
Has Monopoly caused one too many fights? Are you tired of stockpiling resources in Settlers of Catan? Maybe it’s time to introduce your family to a new kind of game, one where you control the story and a single roll of the dice can change everything. This is the world of tabletop role-playing games (RPGs), where players embark on epic adventures under the supervision of a central Game Master. There are a lot of RPGs out there to choose from; here are a few your whole family can get into. Go On a Quest: Dungeons and Dragons The first. The biggest. The king of tabletop RPGs. Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) has been around since 1974, though shows like “Community” and “Stranger Things” have only recently helped the fantasy game gain mainstream
acclaim. There are a lot of rules involved in the gameplay, so D&D can seem overwhelming to new players. But once you become familiar with the game, there are limitless options for characters and quests. How will a human fighter, an elf wizard, and a dwarf cleric save the world? Roll the dice and find out. Become Super: Masks If your family has ever had a long conversation about who would win in a fight between the Hulk and Superman, then Masks is the RPG for you. Fly into Halcyon City where your family can take on the role of a team of young superheroes. Create your own hero and work together to make the world a better place. Fight supervillains, rescue citizens, and ultimately determine who has the best superpower. Solve a Mystery: Bubblegumshoe Did you grow up reading “Nancy Drew”? Are your kids all about BBC’s “Sherlock”? Then Bubblegumshoe is the game for you. This teen sleuth adventure is geared toward younger players, so it’s easier to start than other games on this list. Don’t worry if you’re not a mystery writer; the game comes with prewritten stories for your brilliant characters to solve. The villain might have gotten away with it if it weren’t for your meddling kids!

What to Do When You’re Injured DOG BITES

During summer, everyone is eager to get outdoors and enjoy the sun, but that also means there will be a lot more dogs walking around. While everyone at The Champion Firm is just as excited as the next person to see our four-legged friends out and about more often, we also want to put out a word of caution. Dog bites are among the most frequent injuries that occur throughout the United States, and it can be beneficial to prepare for a worst-case scenario. Preventing Dog Bites The best way to avoid a dog bite is to be wary, especially with unfamiliar dogs. Before you interact with an unfamiliar dog, always ask the owner if it's okay to approach and pet them. If a dog approaches you, remain still. Keep in mind that a dog will bite when it feels threatened, scared, overly stressed, or when it wants to protect something or someone. What Should I Do? In the event of a dog attack, try to put your jacket, purse, or bag between you and the dog. If the dog knocks you to the ground, curl up into a ball and cover your head, neck, and ears.

Involving an Attorney The owner of the dog may be liable for the dog bite, depending on the situation. In the city of Atlanta, a dog owner may be held liable if the person knew the dog was dangerous and/or the owner was in violation of a law that required the dog be either confined or on a leash. We also encourage you to see if the owner has insurance that can cover the bite. More often than not, the owner won’t have insurance for dog bites, but you are still entitled to be compensated for any missed work, pain and suffering, and medical bills. “Don’t run by the pool!” These are words to live by. Rules like this prevent serious injury and save lives. Families all over are cooling off at their local water park, public pool, or at the one right in their backyard. But every pool season comes with its share of injuries and accidents. As you and your family jump in the pool this summer, here a few things to keep in mind so you can stay safe while having fun! Supervision is a must. You never know what might happen in the pool. There should always be at least one adult in the immediate area to keep an eye on swimmers — this applies to everyone, no matter the body of water. If there isn’t a lifeguard on duty, it may be up to you to take on the role. If you can’t stick around and there is no one else to keep watch, pool time will have to wait. Never let kids swim alone, and rely on the buddy system. Watch the weather. Before you head out to the pool — especially an outdoor pool or water park — check the weather. During summer, the weather can turn on a dime. One moment, it’s sunny and still. The next, it’s rainy and windy. If the weather forecast suggests a storm, plan your trip to the pool around the forecast. If you are at the pool and notice trouble on the horizon, wrap things up. You do not want to risk being in the pool or around water when a storm sets in. 4 Safety Tips to Take to the Pool This Summer Making a Splash!
No diving means no diving. Never dive into a body of water with posted no-diving signs or if you cannot verify
the depth of the body of water — and no, you cannot verify depth just by looking at the water. The American Red Cross recommends
a depth of 9 feet or more in unobstructed water. New York, for example, prohibits diving into water 8 feet deep or less. Every year, there is an average of 800 spinal cord injuries caused by diving into shallow water. Become CPR certified. If you or your kids are frequent swimmers, consider becoming first-aid and CPR certified. These are great skills to have and can make a difference in many life-threatening situations, including at the pool. They are also great skills for kids to learn. The average CPR class is three hours long and covers a variety of lifesaving techniques and topics. Certification is offered through the Red Cross, and you can find classes at RedCross.org/take-a-class.

The Mystery Spot; Santa Cruz, California Advertising itself as a “gravitational anomaly,” this wacky spot in the middle of the redwood forest showcases a series of optical illusions such as balls rolling uphill and a cabin where visitors can lean toward the ground and appear to defy gravity. It might not be aliens, like some believe, but visitors of all ages will get a kick out of the illusions messing with their perception. Plus, the nearby hiking trails through the redwoods offer a free added experience. Dinosaur Land; White Post, Virginia It might not be Jurassic Park, but it’s still worth a look. Nestled in the greenery of Northern Virginia, this park has over 50 life-size statues of dinosaurs of all kinds. Tours are self-guided, parking is free, and children (or adults) with dinosaur obsessions are sure to smile and point out their favorites. It’s certainly something to “rawr” home about. Whether these spots are your destinations or you’re just passing through on your summer road trip, visiting these roadside attractions and others like them will add some fun to your travels.
The United States can be a weird place, and some landmarks definitely reflect that sentiment. Along almost every highway, bizarre landmarks
draw road trippers of all ages. Sometimes tourist traps aren’t worth the price of admission, but when you’re taking your summer road trip this year and your family needs a place to stop and stretch, these are three roadside attractions worth checking out. The Lost Sea; Sweetwater, Tennessee The Lost Sea is the largest underground lake in the U.S. Lying 140 feet beneath the surface, it’s a fun escape from the summer heat, since it’s 58 degrees year-round. Kids and adults alike can learn about the history and geology of the area on a guided tour through forest above and lake below. And afterward, you can stop by the general store, ice cream parlor, or café.
