Holiday fire safety advice for homeowners

STEO prepares winter bus travel The Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) consortium is preparing for the arrival of winter. The group manages student busing services for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Upper Canada District School Board. The STEO has sent out letters to parents of students in both districts updating them on the process for notices of bus cancellations due to inclement weather and/or hazardous road conditions. The STEO uses its own website, at www.steo.ca, and also radio and television notices to announce bus service cancellations or delays. STEO staff review weather forecasts every day before 2 p.m. for any foul weather alerts that could affect student transport and then notify bus contractors. Forecasts are reviewed again at 9:30 p.m. If storm, freezing rain or other wea- ther problems are expected, the STEO calls Pelmorex/The Weather Network at 4:30 a.m and also a group of consulting contractors on road conditions for a final check. Information from police and municipal road crews is added to the data before making any cancel- lation decisions. The school district has the final decision on route cancellations, which are made by 5:45 a.m. as some buses begin driving at 6 a.m. Parents are advised to check both the STEO and their local school district website on a regular basis for bus service notices. – Gregg Chamberlain Keep any Christmas tree, real or artificial, away fromheat sources, including fireplaces, heat registers, and floor heaters. Check any ornamental lighting for fraying of the cord and avoid using metallic ornaments which might come in contact with any defective wiring and thus become a shock hazard. Unplug the lights before going to sleep The last week of November is National Home Fire Safety Week, and the Canada Safety Council and local fire departments have advice for homeowners on Christmas season fire safety. First for homes with an open fireplace, homeowners should call a chimney inspec- tion and cleaning service andmake sure all soot and any creosote buildup is cleaned out. Also make sure the area surrounding the hearth is clear of debris and anything which is easy to ignite. Have a good fireplace screen in place. Take care not to build up too big a fire in the fireplace and also make sure the fire is out for the night before going to sleep. Do not use the fireplace as a means of disposing of old wrapping paper, ribbon, or boxes. Some wrapping paper burns quickly and could cause a flash fire situation. Holiday décor may involve ornamental candles. Do not leave any lit candles unat- tended andmake sure all candles are extin- guished before going to sleep. Keep candles away from Christmas trees or other items which are easy to ignite. Use battery-power LED candles in place of real candles. If a Christmas tree is part of the home décor, use an artificial tree if possible, and make sure it is either fire-proof or fire-re- tardant and has the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approval label. If a live tree is part of the décor, make sure to keep it watered and do not let it dry out. Before buying a tree, tap the butt of the tree on the ground. If needles fall out, that means it is too dry.

or when leaving the house. In the kitchen, practise standard cooking safety by making sure the stove and grill areas are keep clean and free of clutter. Do not leave cooking unattended and use timers for ovens to remind that it is on. If someone catches fire on the stove, do not have an overhead venting fan on. That can help spread the flames. Turn the fan off

and, if the fire cannot be extinguished right away, then call 911 for fire emergency and evacuate the house. Check all smoke alarms that they are in working order. Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year and use the Daylight Savings and Standard time changes take place for the scheduled changes.
