object of this action is the flesh, or the carnal nature, or thé “old man” (vs. 5-7; cf. v. 9). - The flesh manifests itself in prac tices mentioned here, in pagan vices which call forth the wrath of the righteous God (vs. 5, 6). Because God is holy, He cannot countenance these ^things. The believer is to put off also those evils that might be termed civilized vices (vs. 7-9). Because none of these things is found in Christ, and because the believer lives in Christ, these un holy things are to be resolutely aban doned, Satan is the instigator of all these vices, pagan or civilized. And the believer is to "resist the devil" (Jas. 4:7) at every opportunity, III. I t M eans the N ew M an I s P ut O n (10-17) The “new man” is the indwelling Christ, the believer’s life, and is to be manifested in the believer’s walk (Vs. 10, 11); Christ is the Lamb to bear away sins (1 Pet. 2:24); the Son to give life (1 John 5:12); the Truth to teach (John 14:6) ; the Light to lead (John 8:12); the Power to keep (Heb. 7:25) ; the Bread to feed (John 6:48)— the all-sufficipnt One for the believer’s life. “Pilt on,” therefore, "the n ew man.”* The graces mentioned in verses 12 and 13 are to be displayed as one displays the g a r m e n t s which he wears. Love (v. 14) is to be put on over all, as a great coat. These are the garments with which the believer is to be seen clothed as he goes among his, fellow men, not to be kept merely for the home or the church, nor for private inspection. The “new man” allows the peace of God, within the heart, to rule in all matters. And "the new man” is thankful (v. 15). Thé power for this living is found in allowing the Word .of Christ to dwell richly within the heart (v. 16), so that all is done in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving t h a n k s to the Father (v. 17 ). Points and Problems 1. "If ye then be risen with Christ" (Col. 3:1). This entire chapter is de voted to the kind of life the Christian should live, something that needs to be preached and taught t o d a y as never before. But the reader should

The word occurs again in Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you.” The setting of the mind upon “ those things which are above” be comes the antidote for temptation and is the spring of spiritual power. The life is “hid with Christ in God.”, The secret of the Christian, life is not found in a round of religious or legal observances, but in a living artd sat isfying Christ. The “life” of the Chris tian is the risen Christ Himself (v. 4). II. Cól. 2:20). It means complete identification with Christ. This is the starting point of all true Christian growth. Because it is the. risen Christ who is the life, the Christian seeks the t h i n g s where Christ is, “on the right hand of God.” The “affection” means the mind (cf. v. 2, R. y.) and refers to thoughts, not feelings. The same word is used in’Christ’s reproof of Peter: “Get thee behind me . . . thou mindest not the things of God,” that is, thy mind is f Lesson material'is based on outlines of International Sunday School Lessons copyrighted by the International /Coun cil of Religious Education and is used by its permission.
