Alumni Highlight Meet Briana C.
Briana, a former member of BGCMC’s GHGH Girls’ Leadership Network, is currently thriving in the Clubs’ new Future Ready program. She recently completed her first year at Cal Poly Humboldt, where she is pursuing a degree in Environmental Science and Management with a focus on Environmental Education, earning straight A’s in her last semester. “I grew up in the Salinas Valley, California— an agriculturally rich region that sparked my early interest in environmental science and land stewardship. My goal is to become an environmental educator who helps others build meaningful connections with the natural world. I’m excited to continue learning, getting involved with student organizations, and seeking opportunities in environmental outreach and advocacy.” Briana had been struggling financially and was questioning whether or not she could continue her college education. She even came to a point where she considered working more, but she was worried it would take away too much time from her studies. BGCMC proudly awarded Briana with both the David Huey-Carla Hudson and Great Futures scholarships, which allowed her to prioritize her education, and gave her the
ability to stay in school without having to find a full-time job.
Through Future Ready, Briana learned financial literacy and took money management classes, so she’s prepared for the fiscal responsibilities of life without having to choose between making ends meet and her dreams. “ I owe much of my success as a college student to the Future Ready program. It’s been an immense support system, being away from home, and in a new setting. One of the most special things to me has been the coaching. It provides me with an open, honest, and safe place to talk about anything. I would one hundred percent recommend this program. It has been a great stepping stone into adulthood. ” Briana is a future leader in environmental science, passionate about community engagement and supporting women in STEM, and she will have a great impact on our society as a whole. In addition to her studies, Briana serves as a Resident Student Service Leader, helping to welcome and guide incoming students through orientation conferences, and in her spare time she finds balance through church, hiking, and going to the gym.
