BREAK AWAY FROM AVERAGE!

The average American tosses 4.4 pounds of trash every single day. It may not seem all that astonishing on the surface, but with 323.7 million people living in the United States, that is roughly 728,000 tons of daily garbage – enough to fill 63,000 garbage trucks. That is 22 billion plastic bottles every year.

It is well known in Cheatham County, Tennessee, that A. O. Smith purchased State Industries (State Stove) which was one of the largest water heater manufacturing companies in the US. A.O. Smith is more than a water heater manufacturing company. A. O. Smith has been in operation for over 140 years having started in 1874 by Charles Jeremiah Smith. He made hardware parts for baby carriages and bicycles, and so much more! DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 1921, under the direction of L.R. Smith, A.O. Smith unveiled “The Mechanical Marvel,” the world’s first fully automated automobile frame assembly plant capable of making a frame every eight seconds (10,000 frames a day)! The plant operated until 1958.

Remember, “Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it.” (Horace Mann)

As such, Horace Mann tirelessly fought to improve the quality of education in the state, as well as working to make education available to all children. Horace used six main principles to guide his decisions and actions: 1. The general public should not remain uneducated. 2. The public should pay for and maintain an education system. 3. Schools should provide educations to children of all backgrounds. 4. Schools should not reflect a particular set of religious beliefs. 5. Schools should reflect the ideals of a free society. 6. Schools should have well-trained, professional teachers.

Could you imagine never going to school? For many years in the United States, there was no such thing as public school. Kids typically learned to read and write from their

parents. If you came from a wealthy family, you might have a tutor or attend a private academy. One of the first people to propose a public-school system was Horace Mann. His ideas on education led Massachusetts to create the first public education system in the country. Horace Mann grew up with few opportunities to attend schooling. Born in 1796, he was the son of a poor farmer in Franklin, Massachusetts. As a boy, he could rarely attend school because his father expected his help on their farm. Instead, he would often go to the town library and read books. A local minister also helped him study languages, like Latin, that were important if one wanted to go to college. At the age of 20, he was accepted to
