MARLENE A. JENSEN-CABLE PEO SCHOLARSHIP Recipient: Rachel Holland Major: Family and Consumer Sciences

This scholarship was established by Dick Cable in memory of his wife, Marlene. This scholarship is part of the Cable Family of Funds, which also includes the Ethel and Ward Cable Family Heroes Fund. Marlene’s parents were living in Rosholt at the time of her birth at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point. Her father had a dental practice in Rosholt; however, after his discharge from the Navy in 1945, Dr. Jensen moved his practice and family to Stevens Point where Marlene attended school. Prior to her senior year in college, Marlene and Dick Cable married on Aug. 8, 1959. About the middle of her final semester, Marlene signed a contract to teach in Whiting/ Stevens Point upon graduation in June. She was forced to terminate the contract when she found out she was pregnant. The school system did not allow a pregnant woman to teach at that time. How things have changed. Marlene and Dick, and their four children, Kurt, Dan, Kathy and Jodi, moved to Eau Claire in 1972, where Marlene continued to be a full-time mom. She did find time to get involved in several community groups including Trinity Lutheran Church, PEO, the University Book Group, and UW-Eau Claire Foundation. One group in which Marlene was particularly passionate was the University’s Single Parent Scholarship Fund which she helped start. What she liked most about this fund, was that it helped women with children and very few resources, obtain a college education. It was most fitting that when Marlene passed away in 2009 after a long siege with liver cancer, friends began a new Single Parent Fund at UWEC in her honor. The fund was named “The Heroes Fund” in which Marlene was to be the FIRST Hero, with others being named and added in the future. Everyone has a hero, and Marlene has been a hero to her family and friends, for SURE!

They spent their lives taking care of numerous foster children, plus their own two sons. RENEE AND JACK JENKINS ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP Recipient: Anna Hoffman Majors: Early Childhood Education; Elementary Education We believe strongly in supporting those students who have chosen to pursue a degree in elementary education. As future educators these students play a crucial role in shaping the next generation. Their dedication to fostering a safe and positive learning environment for young children deserves recognition and support. By providing a scholarship to assist with their tuition, we hope to alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with pursuing a career in education. We aim to empower and inspire these students, ensuring that they have the necessary resources and financial support to excel in their studies and ultimately contribute to the improvement of not only young learners but also our education system. By investing in their education, we are investing in a brighter future for both our students and our society as a whole. The knowledge we gain over our lifetimes is not ours to keep. We are obligated to pass on our knowledge to future generations.

LENICE CHRISTINE MERRILL ESKRITT SCHOLARSHIP Recipient: Rachel Holland Major: Family and Consumer Sciences

Lenice Christine Merrill Eskritt was a housewife and mother, much loved by her family. Her sensitivity and compassion to her fellow being served as an example to all who knew her. She was a very intelligent person, who, for whatever reason, was not able to continue her education beyond high school. This scholarship honors her being and potential in the desire that others in similar circumstances may be assisted in developing their potential through education.

JOAN WHITFORD AULD FUTURE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP Recipient: America Ambriz-Zermeno Majors: Elementary Education; Spanish

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist with costs to UWSP School of Education students during their student teaching and/or student teacher certification. Joan (Whitford) Auld grew up in Spencer, Wis., raised by her grandparents, Emma and Jonas Ayer. From early childhood, she dreamed of becoming a teacher. After graduating from Spencer High School, she enrolled at Wisconsin State College at Stevens Point. She spent her weekends, as well as her winter and summer breaks, back in Spencer, working to help pay for her college education. In 1956, she graduated with a degree in elementary education and began her teaching career in Marshfield, Wis. After a dozen years of service there, she married Lawrence Auld and moved to Sumter, South Carolina, where she raised two children, defeated cancer, and ultimately returned to teaching. Mrs. Auld retired in 1996, after spending a total of nearly 30 years in the classroom, where she taught hundreds and hundreds of children to read and write, to add and subtract, and to respect others. Even in retirement, she remained an educator-at-heart, serving as the “first teacher” for her grandchildren, much as she had for her own children.
