Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan

05 - NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Standards In order to plan for a connected system of trails for the future, the following system guidelines was developed. Regional Trail: Defined and recognized by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the purpose of this trail is to provide regional and interregional routes. The intention is to provide access throughout the City, to adjacent City destinations and communities, and ultimately connect to the D/FW metro area. Like a major thoroughfare being fed by all other trail types and walkways, this trail type will have the highest user capacity and the greatest range of user types, providing opportunities to travel longer distances. Trails designated as part of the regional Veloweb should be concrete and minimum 12 feet in width.

Community Trail: Community trails will comprise the majority of the trails in DeSoto. These trails will provide more local area connections between neighborhoods and key City destinations, while linking communities to the larger trail system of the spine trails and regional Veloweb. Community trails should be concrete and minimum 8 feet in width to accommodate the local user volume.
