Besoin d’un avocat?
L’avocat est un expert en législation; il est en mesure de vous informer sur les lois et les règlements, sur vos devoirs et vos droits, et il représente vos intérêts. Ce membre en règle du barreau n’est pas là que pour vous tirer d’affaire lorsque le mal est fait, il peut aussi agir à titre préventif au moyen de judicieux conseils. L’avocat peut vous représenter dans de multiples domaines. Il peut vous aider s’il survient des problèmes à la suite de la cons- truction, la vente ou l’achat d’une propriété. Lors de conflits familiaux liés à une séparation, un divorce ou au partage du patrimoine familial, ce professionnel pourra servir de média- teur; il privilégiera les ententes à l’amiable. Expert en négociation de contrats, ce conseiller juridique vous aidera à les faire respecter en vertu de la loi. De plus, il sera en mesure de recouvrer des mauvaises créances et vous défendra si vous avez subi une injustice au travail. L’avocat plaide aussi en droit criminel (alcool au volant, crimes économiques tels que la fraude ou le vol à l’étalage, etc.). Lorsque cela est possible, les membres du barreau privilégient fréquemment la médiation, car l’affrontement devant les tribunaux peut parfois traîner en longueur durant des mois, voire des années. Bref, consulter un avocat en temps opportun peut vous éviter bien des problèmes et des pertes de temps et d’argent. N’atten- dez pas que les choses dégénèrent. Généralement, la préven- tion constitue la meilleure solution!

Legal Aid offices in Canada offer an alternative for lower-income people, who couldn’t otherwise afford the legal support and justice to which they are entitled by law. There are also some lawyers who will take on a worthy cause “pro bono”, or for the public good, without charging the client. So during this week, take the opportunity to learn more about how your legal system works, and what it does for you, everyday.

Law Day is a national event celebrating the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Originated by the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and first held in Canada in 1983, Law Day is aimed at educating and informing the public about the role and importance of the law. Since many people have a limited knowl- edge about the law and how the legal system works, Law Day empowers the public at large. It provides an excellent opportunity for the profession to educate the public about the vital role that lawyers and the judi- ciary serve in guaranteeing an open, independent and unbiased judicial system.
