Hello to all members of the College Community,

Can you believe that we are almost halfway through Term 3! We welcome Bill back from his Long Service Leave and are grateful that he seems to have brought some of the European sunshine along with him!

SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE:

PRIDE IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: NAPLAN RESULTS

• Year 5 and 8 student reflections

We take immense pride in the academic achievements of our students, and we are thrilled to share the fantastic results of the latest NAPLAN assessments. With NAPLAN being altered in 2023, there is no direct way for schools across the country to compare their results to previous years, however what we do know is that the results from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 show that the majority of students show a Strong understanding of the curriculum. According to NAPLAN, this means that ‘ student results met challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing ’. Of particular note, the Year 9 results across the board (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation, and Numeracy) are the strongest we ’ ve had in years, with The Lakes having higher percentages of students in the Strong and Exceeding bands than both similar and network school in every assessable area! Congratulations to the following Year 9 students who received NAPLAN awards for their achievements and growth over the testing period:

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

PRIMARY REFLECTION PHOENIX & ASHA YEAR 5 SRC

Woohoo we ’ re halfway through the school year! How exciting! We ’ ve had a great start to the term. We ’ ve bought bean bags for the classrooms which students can use as a reward or spend time on them using their dojo points. The Primary Campus have been very busy with production rehearsals for our “ Bring It On ” production which we are a bit nervous about but also excited about! This term the SRC students will also be organising a footy colours day, so we ’ re excited to see what everyone dresses up in.

SECONDARY REFLECTION TORI & CARMEL YEAR 8 SRC

We are Tori and Carmel, your 2023 Year 8 SRC Representatives.

We are here to tell you about what the Year 8 Cohort have been up to and what we are looking forward to for the rest of the term.

The Year 8’ s have spent the first few weeks of this term settling in to their new timetable and new lifestyles classes. Many of us have also been busy attending Production Rehearsals after school. While there hasn ’ t been anything too exciting to report on so far, we are all really looking forward to some events coming up this term. We are all looking forward to our Production of ‘ Bring It On ’ taking place this Tuesday and Wednesday at Plenty Ranges Convention Centre. The last few days have been really exciting as students from across the Primary and Secondary Campus completed final rehearsals and finished up the last few props.

We are also looking forward to attending the World Skills Expo later in August to see what career and training opportunities are out there for us when we finish school.

BRINGING IT ON!

THE JOURNEY OF A WHOLE SCHOOL PRODUCTION BY DIRECTOR AIMEE FREIND

In late 2019 I was asked by friend and former colleague, Jayne Barker to go with her to see ‘ Bring It On the Musical ’. She raved about the show as she had seen it before and mentioned it was one of her all - time favourites. So I went, along with Marc Heenan and we were blown away. During intermission, I posed the question to Jayne and Marc, ‘ Could we do this musical at The Lakes? ’ We all agreed that it would suit our students and we could put on an amazing performance. All systems were go for our production hot the stage in 2020. However, with the circumstances around the world, we were left with no alternative than to cancel. We felt like we had unfinished business with this production and were led to finish what we had started. We began auditions in the middle of 2022 and it was then that I knew this production was going to be outstanding. Our students at The Lakes have given their everything for this show. Their energy and enthusiasm have been inspirational. They have grown as a little family and have supported and encouraged each other throughout the entire experience. We have been so fortunate to have Mischa Wright working with us on the choreography for the show. Mischa is a part of The Lakes Alumni and has given so much of her time to create and teach some of the incredible dances on display. We have also had students take on leadership roles with choreography as well, which we are so grateful for.

‘ Bring It On the Musical ’ is filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness. It teaches us to love the skin we are in and to accept each other, despite our differences. It has been an incredibly rewarding journey to direct this production of ‘ Bring It On the Musical ’. We wish to dedicate our performance to Jayne Barker and hope she enjoys watching it from heaven. We hope that you too will enjoy the show and can celebrate with us the achievements of our Lakes Legends.

School productions at The Lakes are meaningful for those involved because they offer a unique opportuni- ty for students to showcase their talents and creativity in front of their peers, family and community. I have been very lucky to experience and be a part of many productions at The Lakes. Whether it be a class dance number, a role in the ensemble or a character in the main cast, it was the supportive and endlessly fun environment that brought me back every time to kindle my passion for entertaining. Being a part of so many stage shows has really been a highlight of my school life. It ’ s quite bittersweet that it is all coming to an end this year after so many great memories and experiences, but also very rewarding to be able to present a highly anticipated production like no other one last time. It has been one long process that came with a lot of setbacks, but we are back and better than ever! BRING. IT. ON. – Laura L

solutions available like Lastpass. Even most browsers including Microsoft's Edge, Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox include a built - in password manager which can be linked to an online account.

Instead of using the same password for different websites and services, maintaining a notepad document full of passwords, fumbling with sticky notes hidden under your keyboard and wracking your brain trying to remember what variation of password you've chosen, consider using a password manager to keep your secrets safe. A password manager is a service which can protect all of your passwords behind a master password and potentially a second factor (like an SMS or email code), generate secure random passwords and automatically fill out online forms for you if you choose to install a browser extension or service on your phone. Bitwarden is a good free solution although there are paid

Multifactor Authentication

Microsoft has stated that 90% of all account breaches could have been prevented if they were protected by multifactor authentication (also called 2FA). If you have the option to use phone/text/email or app based authentication it's a good way to protect your accounts and services; the baddies will need something you own as well as something you know.

ATTENDANCE

http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/ attendance_policy_2022.pdf

Schooling is compulsory for people aged 6 to 17 years (unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted). Daily attendance is important for all students to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind - socially or developmentally. The Lakes believes all students should attend school all day, every day when the school is open for instruction and is committed to working in partnership with the College community to encourage and support full school attendance.

Senior school students are required to have a 90% attendance record at school in each subject to successfully pass any Year 10, 11 or 12 subject. This includes any approved absence. Students who fail to meet this requirement will be asked to attend either break time or after school redemption classes. Families are asked to notify The Lakes South Morang College of absences by recording the absence on Sentral or alternatively contacting the Administration Office on either campus. If a student is absent, and the College has not been notified by a parent/carer, the College will contact families via a Sentral notification to the Parent Portal.

Policies are available to all families via the the Sentral Portal (under Resources) or via our website http://www.thelakes.edu.au/policies -- reports.html
