Physicians of the Mouth

Why Your Dentist May Be Best Suited to Treat Your Headaches

This month, we’ve asked our associate Dr. Allan Gross to share his knowledge of dentistry with us Conventional wisdom used to state that doctors and dentists played different roles in our lives. Our dentists helped ensure our teeth were clean and didn’t have cavities, but it was doctors who monitored our overall health and wellness. Thankfully, that misbelief is steadily being dispelled. As the link between oral hygiene and all sorts of health issues is revealed, we’re beginning to see dentists for what they really are: the physicians of our mouths.

Have you ever thought your dentist would be more suited to diagnose and treat the cause of your headaches than your general practitioner?Well, with TMD, that’s the case. The role of a dentist has become more comprehensive, and helping people with TMD correct their bite and feel better is increasingly becoming part of our practice. At Gardens Dental Care, we have the tools to accurately pinpoint and treat the cause of your TMD. I like to think of TMD treatment as your road map to a better bite. The first step in creating that road map involves calibrating three important coordinates: your teeth, your muscles, and your joints. We use sophisticated imaging devices to observe how your muscles are functioning and if there is any misalignment or dysfunction with your TMJ. These dynamic, high-tech images allow us to eliminate guesswork during the diagnostic process. Rather than throwing a few different treatments at the wall and seeing what sticks, we can pinpoint exactly why you’re suffering from TMD and precisely address the issue. Once we know where the mechanics of your bite can be improved, we create an orthotic appliance to retrain your jaw so it can function optimally. Once you replace your less-than-ideal biting habits with better ones, you’ll outgrow the need for the appliance. For many of our patients, years of headaches and dizziness —which are usually chalked up to stress or some other external factor — subside after TMD treatment. We still have a long way to go in terms of raising awareness about all the ways dentistry can help patients improve their overall health and quality of life. As practitioners, we need to ask better questions of our patients and educate them on all the services we provide. Still, we’re making leaps and bounds from where we were just a decade ago. Maybe I’ll convince Dr. Yates to make everyone on our team wear a button that says, “Ask us about your headaches.” It can’t hurt, right? Dr. Allan Gross is an expert in the treatment of TMD. For a number of years, he was a clinical instructor at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies. When he’s not helping patients feel better, he enjoys playing tennis, golf, and pickleball and spending time with his family. We’re honored to have Dr. Gross as part of our team. You make the button and I’ll wear it! And together we’ll continue to provide the best services for our patients. –Dr. Allan Gross –Dr. David Yates

One area outside of the mouth where we’ve seen the potential for dental treatment to alleviate issues is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is the joint that connects your jaw to the front of your skull. You can feel it working by pressing your hand in front of your ear and opening and closing your mouth. We use the term temporomandibular disorder (TMD) to describe problems that occur from this joint malfunctioning or moving improperly.

CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to mean heading to the local Irish bar and drinking a large green beverage. If you’re not interested in going out this year and would prefer to do something at home with the family, here are a few ways everyone can celebrate. IRISH-THEMED FOOD What better way to get festive than by making some St. Patrick’s Day- themed dishes? You can make rainbow cupcakes, green cookies, St. Patrick’s Day popcorn, or — for a more traditional dish — Irish soda bread. You can also cook up an array of greens for dinner on March 17, which could include Brussels sprouts, spinach, cucumbers, green beans, peas, or asparagus. A MISCHIEVOUS LEPRECHAUN To treat your kids to a fun game, leave green footprints around the house and participate in impish tricks! Empty a tissue box, hide the remote, swap out regular light bulbs with green ones, or draw rainbows on the windows. You’re only limited by your imagination. EXPLORING IRISH CULTURE Another way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your family is to sit down and read about Irish culture with your kids. Learn where the Family-Friendly Activities

legend of the leprechaun came from or read other stories from Irish folklore. You can also watch videos of Irish dance performances and encourage the kids to make their own. There’s also fascinating history on St. Patrick and why he became the patron of the holiday that your family members can research together. If you have Irish roots, tell your kids about your heritage. WATCH IRISH MOVIES For a relaxing activity, settle down in front of the TV for a movie night filled with films related to Irish culture. Try “The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns,”“Song of the Sea,”“The Luck of the Irish,” or “The Secret of Kells.” MAKE AN IMPACT Teach your kids how to be “greener” this month by doing more for the environment. Discuss ways to save energy and water in the home, and talk about the importance of taking a break from electronics and enjoying the outdoors. This list is not exhaustive by any means, but it’s a good start to get your family to create new ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You might even create family traditions that will last for years to come.

Dental Literacy How One Dentist Makes Brushing Fun As a freshman at the University

Courtad brought her life-size creations to classrooms settings, letting the kids “brush” away the plaque and germs. The teeth initially wore frowny faces because they weren’t clean, and the students learned that brushing them removed the bacteria and turned their frowns upside down. As Courtad notes, “Obviously, the teeth were sad when they were covered in these Velcro germs before the kindergartners took a giant toothbrush and ... brushed those little germs off the teeth with me.” After completing dental school, Dr. Courtad continued to pursue her passion for educating kids about oral health. The initial outreach project laid the foundation for the children’s book series the “Toothful Tales” adventures, which were illustrated and written by Dr. Courtad. Today, Dr. Courtad’s books about dental care, starring the same fun characters, are found in dental offices and health care programs all over the country. In collaboration with the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy, Dr. Courtad has expanded the series with books written for expectant parents in underserved communities. According to health coordinator and dental hygienist Diana Leathers, “These books provide a great deal of education because they are easy to read and provide important information using fun graphics.”

of California San Francisco School of Dentistry, Jeanette Courtad was tasked with a daunting community outreach project: Educate kindergartners on the importance of brushing their teeth. Luckily, Courtad is also an artist, and she came up with a creative way to captivate the youngsters’ attention. Using her talents as a painter and sculptor, Courtad used materials, like couch foam and fabric, to mold personified characters that

represented teeth and other parts of the mouth. For example, Cuspi, the cuspid, is concerned with aesthetics and how things feel — she doesn’t like to be covered in sticky sweets. Mola, the molar, is all about functionality. Tongo, the tongue, is a bit of an antihero. As Courtad explains, “Even though he helps clean sticky sweets off the teeth, Tongo is the one [that wants] them in the first place.”
