551 HARRISON BRIDGE RD., SIMPSONVILLE, SC 29680 | 864-336-2965 | WWW.MARSHALL-ORTHODONTICS.COM STRAIGHT TALK

IT’S TIME FOR THE AMAZING BRACE! DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN OUR SCAVENGER HUNT?

As hard as it is to believe, summer is almost here already. Pretty soon, it will be time to break out the backyard Wiffle ball gear (one of my favorite pastimes as a kid), plan day trips to the lake, and pack our bags for a camping trip. I, for one, can’t wait to get started. Speaking of spending time outdoors, could you use a Yeti cooler full of tasty snacks for your adventures this summer? If your answer is yes (I know mine would be), then my team and I have you covered. To celebrate the seasons changing, we’re holding an epic scavenger hunt across Simpsonville and Greenville that we’re calling The Amazing Brace, and whoever

earns the most points in the hunt will win a snack-packed cooler! There are 10 challenges total to check off the list, and the more you complete, the more likely it is that you’ll take home the Yeti. The Amazing Brace kicks off April 1 and runs through Tuesday, June 30. To enter, all you need to do is clip out the scorecard below and check off each item as you complete it by posting a selfie or other related photo on social media. Marshall Orthodontics is on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, so feel free to post to any of those platforms. Just make sure to tag us in order to prove you completed the challenge.

When the deadline hits, my team and I will tally up the social media posts to see who completed the most challenges and racked up enough points to win the Yeti full of snacks. We’ll announce the big winner on our Facebook page on Wednesday, July 1! Follow us there for updates on the contest and to see what we’re up to here at the office.

Now that the details are out of the way, I can’t resist: Ready, set, brace!

THE AGE OF STRESS HELPING YOUR CHILD OVERCOME ANXIETY

CAN I HELP REDUCE THEIR STRESS? According to KidsHealth.org, good nutrition, proper rest, and healthy attention are great ways to help kids manage their stress. Set time aside each day to talk and spend time with your children; talking about worries will reduce or relieve anxieties. If you know about an upcoming stressful situation, like a school exam or a health checkup, prepare your child by studying with them or talking to them about what to expect. Don’t stop here. For more tools and information regarding stress reduction in children, visit KidsHealth.org or contact your doctor.

It’s hard to imagine kids as anything but carefree, happy, and eager to explore the world around them. However, children experience stress just like adults do, which can severely impact their typically cheerful dispositions. Since April is National Stress Awareness Month, now is an opportune time to familiarize yourself with tools and information that can help you alleviate your child’s stress. WHAT ARE THEIR STRESSORS? Any number of everyday factors can lead to stress, and stress can plague anyone who feels overwhelmed. Toddlers and young children going to day care or school for the first time may experience separation anxiety due to being apart from their parents. Older

kids and teenagers may feel mounting social and academic pressure. Even something as simple as overhearing loved ones arguing or seeing a sad news report can add to a child’s stress levels.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS STRESSED?

When a kid is stressed, they will exhibit odd behavior and even undergo physical changes. Depending on your child’s age, watch for mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, headaches, trouble focusing, or withdrawal from the people around them. According to KidsHealth.org, younger children may also pick up habits like twirling their hair or sucking their thumb, while older kids may start to bully others, lie, or rebel.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: SARA MEET THE NEW SCHEDULING COORDINATOR!

Sara is one of our newest employees — she has only been our scheduling coordinator since last November — but she’s already running our office calendar like a pro. If you’ve stopped by recently or called to make an appointment, you’ve probably seen her at the front desk or chatted with her on the phone. When she’s helping others, Sara says she feels like she’s really in her element. “For my last job, I actually worked as an orthodontic assistant, but I’ve always been a receptionist, too, and I just really enjoy being a receptionist and doing receptionist duties,” she says. “I like interacting with people, being able to help people with their questions, and being the first one they talk to when they come in.” Sara is almost as new to Simpsonville as she is to Marshall Orthodontics. Last fall, her husband Nate got a job here as a welder and sheet metal worker, and they moved their little family over from Aiken. For Sara, whether she’d be working in orthodontics after moving here was never in question. She’s been in love with the field since she first discovered it in college.

“Then I decided to try orthodontics just because I like helping people, and I like being able to see the progress of people’s smiles. I thought that would be fun!” When she isn’t in the office, Sara likes to spend her free time

hanging out with Nate and their two dogs, Bailey (a yellow Labrador) and Chance (a Labrador mix). Nate and Sara also have a cat with a name that’s a bit more out there: Bane, an homage to the “Batman” villain. “My husband didn’t want cats, and I decided to let him name Bane so he felt he was part of it,” Sara says, laughing. Sara, you’ve been a bright light in our office since day one! We’re so happy to have you here and can’t wait for our patients to get to know you better. Readers, don’t hesitate to say hello to Sara next time you’re in the office. She’d love to learn a bit more about your journey!

“I was actually going to school to be a vet tech, but I decided that wasn’t for me,” she recalls.

MARSHALL ORTHODONTICS’ CROSSFIT CONNECTION OUR PATIENTS’ PARENTS HAVE OPENED A GYM! Here at Marshall Orthodontics, we consider our patients our friends. When something goes wrong with their teeth, we help them get through it, but we also love to celebrate their victories outside of the orthodontic world. That’s why we’re so excited to tell you about CrossFit Fountain Inn! For the last year, we’ve been seeing two great kids named Carlyn and Blakely here at the office. They’re fantastic patients, so when we learned some big news about what their parents have been up to, we knew we had to share it. Carlyn and Blakely’s dad, Andrew Stoddard, has partnered up with locals Brent and Will Abercrombie on a brand-new business venture. The trio bought the old CrossFit Infliction in Fountain Inn this January, and after a quick revamping of the space, they opened the doors of their new gym, CrossFit Fountain Inn, on March 1. “At our gym, you will run, jump, row, pull, push, throw, lift, and use your body in the way it was meant to be used — all with certified coaches in a fun class setting. The workouts vary from day to day, and we always push ourselves to find new limits. The entire CrossFit program is designed to do one thing: increase your fitness,” Lauren Stoddard and Emilee Abercrombie, who are married to two of the founders, told us. Most CrossFit gyms are just for adults, but one thing that sets CrossFit Fountain Inn apart is that it also has a program for kids like Carlyn and Blakely! Children ages 6–12 can join CrossFit Kids, a program packed with fun fitness games and workouts. It’s designed to keep kids healthy while also boosting their motivation and self-confidence. How great is that? Any local business that helps kids and adults stay healthy is a big win in our book. If you want to try CrossFit Fountain Inn, you can get your first class for free before committing to a monthly membership. ECO-FRIENDLY AND KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES FOR EARTH DAY

KEEP IT GREEN THE BEST ECO-FRIENDLY AND KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES FOR EARTH DAY

PLANT A GARDEN. Gardening is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time outdoors. Your kids can learn about caring for another living thing and grow their own vegetables and fruits! A great way to start is to find out what’s in season in your area. If you don’t have an outdoor garden, you can pick out some indoor plants or create a hanging garden with recycled bottles! BUILD A COMPOST SYSTEM. If you have a garden, the next best thing you can do is start composting at home! Did you know that you can compost your cardboard products? Instead of waiting for the recycling truck every other week, you can use your spare green and brown waste to create incredibly nutritious soil for your garden! Green waste includes vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, nutshells, coffee grounds, etc. Brown waste includes cardboard, dead leaves, paper egg cartons, wine corks, and more. Get a bin and maintain a green-to-brown ratio of 1-to-2. Layer, water, and turn the compost to keep it healthy. It can take anywhere from two months to a year, depending on what you put in and how often you turn it.

It can be tough to figure out how to switch up family game nights. Kids can be very attached to their electronics, making it hard to get them invested in anything

else. With Earth Day coming up this month, you have the perfect excuse to put down the phones and get outside to save the planet. If you’re looking for ways to spend time with your kids on Earth Day, try these eco-friendly family activities! PICK UP TRASH AND MAKE ART WITH IT. You can teach your kids a lot about downcycling and upcycling through recycled art. Downcycling is when waste is recycled to become a new product, but there’s a loss of quality as a result. Upcycling is the opposite: Whatever you recycle becomes a product with a higher value. One way to upcycle is to create recycled art. Use old newspapers or magazines to create collages or papier-mâché bowl sculptures around balloons, jars, or your own custom shape with chicken wire. You can also use old plastic or glass bottles as beautiful hanging planters or create a memorable wind chime from jar lids, tin cans, plastic silverware, and old rubber bands.

We hope you and your family have fun with these planet-loving activities! Stay clean!
