River tourism may be the next big thing for Prescott-Russell GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca stream near Chutes-à-Blondeau.

Charlebois noted that Destination: Gatin- eau, which promotes the Gatineau region as a marine tourism site on the Québec side of the Ottawa River, will have good infor- mation the consultants can draw on for the UCPR study.

L’Orignal | With the success of the inau- gural Ottawa River Festival there is now time to reflect and review the potential of riverside tourism in the future of Prescott- Russell. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) is diving headfirst into the idea with approval for a feasibility study that will fo- cus on the potential for developing a riv- erside corridor as a tourism destination to benefit communities along the Ottawa River. Sylvain Charlebois, UCPR director for economic development and tourism, said the study will answer the big question of “What is the potential for marine tourism?” for not just the larger communities like Rockland and Hawkesbury but also smaller riverside villages like Treadwell, Lefaivre, andWendover. “One of the major things we noticed,” Charlebois said, referring to a past econom- ic strategy review for the counties, “is that the Ottawa River is undeveloped (for tour- ism).” The UCPR will contract with Plania, part of the Dessau Group of consultants, for an in- depth study on the potential for a riverside corridor as part of the overall tourism devel- opment strategy for the Prescott-Russell re- gion. Charlebois’ department has budgeted $43,000 for the study with a first interim re- port expected in August. The final report is due later in the fall. The study will examine existing infrastruc- ture, both public and commercial, that can support marine tourism. It will also examine what type of improvements are needed to enhance the future potential. That includes a hydrographic analysis of the river itself and the South Nation River as the Ottawa’s major tributary. “They are also going to look at what is navigable in the river,” Charlebois said, cit- ing as an example the Carillon Dam down- “Road runner” caught Ottawa | No more “beep-beep” for this driver for awhile. A 35-year-old Ottawa man is headed for a meeting with a judge to talk about his late- night driving habits after police charged him going more than twice the speed limit on the highway. An OPP highway patrol clocked a west- bound red Dodge Challenger going over the limit on the 417 Highway at 11:15 p.m. on July 4. The radar readout showed the vehicle going 211 kilometres an hour in 100-kilometre zone. Police pursued the Dodge Challenger which did not stop right away. The driver later pulled off on a highway exit and then stopped his vehicle. He now faces charges of stunt driving un- der the provincial traffic act and failing to stop for police right away when required. His court date on the charges is Aug. 31. Police remind motorists that Ontario now has a zero-tolerance policy towards speed- ing. VISION@EAP.ON.CA PRESCOTT-RUSSELL
