STYLING THE OUTDOOR SPACE
SPACE PL ANNING T I PS • Outdoor spaces often work like great rooms (open-space floor plans) you need to create zones — dining — entertaining — relaxing — pool/sun time — outdoor media. • Start with the foundational piece such as the sofa/sectional or dining table. Then layer in the secondary pieces such as coffee/side tables or a bar/buffet and chairs and finally accent pieces like drum tables, oversized hurricanes/lanterns or a cart. • Sectional sofas can really define an outdoor zone, allow for more seating and are ideal for creating a space conducive to conversation. • Outdoor rugs as well as outdoor drapes can help to define zones. • All-weather mats are designed to give the look of natural sisal with the easy care of durable, water-repellent polypropylene. • Synthetic rugs are available in vibrant colors and intricate patterns. • Focal points for an outdoor space could be a tree, view of the sea, outdoor fireplace, swimming pool, statue or the furniture itself. • Storage is important. Ideally outdoor serveware, dinnerware and glassware shold be kept in the dining zone and games, towels, books etc. in the fun, relaxation zone. This will prevent trips back and forth to the house. • A coordinating ottoman doubles as a casual coffee table for trays of drinks your client may want to position painter’s tape in the outdoor space itself, representing each furniture piece in actual size, to see how the layout will impact the traffic flow.
