STYLING THE DINING ROOM
SPACE PL ANNING T I PS • Arrange the main piece first (the dining table & chairs) then related furniture (buffet or sideboard), and finally the secondary pieces (extra chairs, small bar or wine cabinet) fill the room appropriately. • Consider the size of the dining room before selecting a table. Dining Furniture should be in scale with the rest of the room. It should not be so large that it takes up the entire space. Round tables are great for tight spaces while square or rectangular tables are better suited for larger dining rooms. • Extension tables are an ideal solution for those who entertain often. • A pedestal-base table allows for more flexible seating than a table with legs. • While a matched table and chairs gives a cohesive look, mixing contemporary with antique styles — or pairing a wooden table with slipcovered, wicker, painted or leather chairs allows for some personal flair. Don’t forget benches as a seating option as well. • Plan for extra seats for entertaining and discuss a plan to clear them out when not in use for better flow. • Buffets, bars and cabinets can be a great storage solution and also used for serving.
