“Honey” anniversary for Maxville Relay for Life
raising $27,000US for cancer research. The Relay for Life movement went global from there with more than 25 countries now serving as hosts for at least one and often several community Relays of Life to collect money for cancer research and sup- port programs and raise the public profile of cancer research and give people who have survived cancer a chance to show oth- ers that there is hope for a cure. The Maxville relay is one of two that the SDG-PR chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society hosts in the Five Counties region. The other is in Ingleside at Farran’s Park and marks its eighth anniversary this year. Both take place in June and the number of par- ticipants in each, both fundraiser teams and cancer survivors, continues to grow. “It (Maxville) has grown tremendously,” said Bourassa. “From 80 teams when it be- gan and $172,000 raised. Year 10 was our best with 170 teams and $553,000 raised.” Last year’s Maxville relay had 130 teams doing their laps around the ballfield, de- spite the pouring rain, and raising $405,000 for the latest contribution from the region to cancer research. The number of cancer survivors taking part in the event last year tallied more than 300, a good response de- spite the weather, Bourassa noted. The 10th anniversary of the event had more than 400 cancer survivors take part in the opening lap. “It’s just amazing to see that many cancer survivors all getting together.” Signups are open now for this year’s Max- ville Relay for Life. MAXVILLE | Thirteen is supposed to be an unlucky number. But that is not the case for Maxville’s Relay for Life as supporters make sure the 13th anniversary for the event is a special time for both partici- pants and spectators. In the traditional wedding calendar, the 13th anniversary is the “honey” or “lace” an- niversary. For Carolyn Bourassa and others at the Canadian Cancer Society’s SDG-PR district office in Cornwall, the “honey” anni- versary for the Maxville Relay for Life dove- tails very well with the “diamond-and-gold” 75th anniversary for the Canadian Cancer Society. “We’re trying to pull out all the stops,” Bourassa said, regarding plans to mark both occasions. While the Canadian Cancer Society is now a venerable non-profit institution that has made its presence well-known across the nation, the whole Relay for Life movement is still a new but growing phenomenon in the country. The concept began more than 25 years ago in the U.S. with the American Cancer Society when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, WA, colorectal surgeon created his own solo marathon to help raise money and aware- ness about cancer. During a 24-hour period he ran circles around a local university running track, log- ging 83 miles by the end of the last lap and
