Gilly Gobinet: Artistry in every style

F rom the diversity on display, you’d be forgiven for assuming this tucked-away art gallery in Fitches Creek is the exhilarating result of an alliance of esteemed painters. A visual feast of myriad mediums, there are tropical flora and fauna in acrylic, watercolour chattel houses, humorous cartoons, delicate pen and ink sketches, and portraits of pets loved and lost, immortalised in canvas. In fact, they are all the creation of just one person. Gilly Gobinet’s versatility is precisely why she has become one of the most sought-after artists on Antigua’s hospitality scene. In recent years she has been commissioned by luxury resorts including Jumby Bay, Galley Bay and Moon Gate to create unique pieces to brighten public spaces, suites and private residences alike. Adapting to any commission – while staying consistently on- brand – is both a passion and a welcome challenge. New clients are invited to visit Gilly’s working gallery at her Needs Must Circle home, where barely a square foot has been excluded from her bacchanalia of colour and canvas. “All my styles are displayed and clients can choose what best suits them, whether it’s for a hotel or a private home,” she explains. “It’s always interesting to see how I can meet the brief.” Frequent commissions include pet portraits for which Gilly donates 10 percent to rescue charity Dogs and Cats of Antigua. She can also organise framing and overseas shipping. From the large, semi-abstract triptych with muted tones painstakingly crafted for Moon Gate to the warm, vibrant tropical fruits so beloved by Jumby Bay, the difference in Gilly’s styles is flagrant but the end result is perpetually a delight. n
