SECOND PLACE 10–13 YEAR OLDS CATEGORY JHAMELY PAREDES Ottos Comprehensive School. Why should young people volunteer? Volunteering as a young person is very important because future employers ask for work experience. As a young person 16 or 15 looking for a job you have no work experience but if you are commonly being a volunteer, employers might take what you do as work experience. Volunteering shows that you are a very helpful person and when you are looking for a job these type of personalities are what potential employers are looking for. I love to volunteer and help people with anything. I have also been recognized as a very helpful person at my sailing club, and I feel very good about that. I am very active when it comes to after-school WINNER 14–18 YEAR OLDS CATEGORY KESUS BARNES Irene B. Williams School Why do people volunteer? At the break of day when skies are bright, Arise hearts that have us in their sight. They rise up with a purpose, firm but still, And give their time to help make good. Not for fame, not for wealth, Nor stamped-in-stone or gold-enameled depth. They give because they hear the call, To lift another lest one fall. They see a need, they mend the seam, They build the bridge across the brook. They plant the seeds, they feed, they cheer, That’s why the people give their time. A lost stranger, a lonely child, A garden flourished where weeds had grown – They show the power of open hands, And kindness given on many shores.

Some were helped when times were hard, A dinner from a neighbour, a caring letter from a friend. They pay it forward, year by year, Their gratitude makes service valuable to them. In giving hours, they gain so much more A sense of life they cannot escape. A lesson learned, a bond retained, A guiding star on darkest night. They work for love, volunteer for hope, They sew together a greater scope. For when they give, they heal as well, Their hearts strengthened, their lives they tell. Not angels or saints, just gentle, They take action, not hide behind. They lift the world, calm its fear, That’s why the people volunteer. And in their striving a truth emerges: We’re strongest not as “I” but “we” and “you.” A brighter tomorrow grows year by year – Because of those who serve.

cats in bad conditions. I feel really good about helping the dogs and cats in bad conditions. In my volleyball club, when my coach asks for assistance, I am the first to help him or her out, also when we are finished practising I am wiling to retrieve balls that went into the YMCA stands or outside. I am always there willing to unload my coaches truck packed with needed supplies for our practice session. From

very young I was taught to respect people and always be helpful and I am thankful for being raised that way. Also as an after school activity, I am a member of the Toastmasters and the membership program. In Toastmasters you are taught about public speaking and your way of presenting , and how you organize your speeches and body language when presenting. Toastmasters is a wonderful opportunity for young shy timid teenagers. It opens many doors. I wasn’t shy or timid but I chose to involve myself in these activities so I could be a support to others. I can also say I was influenced by my sister.

With all these activities I can say I have many references for my future job and many persons that can say I am helpful and willing to work hard. At school I am a person who has and loves to have good grades. I also like to have challenges when it comes to my work it makes me work harder and want to beat the challenges and put my standards higher and aim higher. Most of all, when I volunteer, I make life better for others and that makes me happy.

activities because I believe when you push yourself it benefits you. I would advise all young people to volunteer. From the activities you do, you can get many references and good comments about how active, helpful, respectful and hardworking you are. Some of the activities I do are the OCS choir, AYC, which is a sailing club, The Chargers Volleyball Club, and am open to more activities. I also volunteer at the Spay and Neuter Clinic in Antigua. In this activity, I assist and I also learn about dogs and
